According to Jammu University’s Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof Prakash Anthal, Shekhar was placed under suspension by a departmental inquiry committee looking into a complaint filed by some female students against him a few days ago. Anthal told media,

On September 1, 2022, around 20 to 22 students had lodged a written complaint against Prof Chander Shekhar for sexual harassment and the case was being investigated by the university’s committee. Based on the committee’s inquiry report, he was placed under suspension and barred from teaching and evaluation given the pending inquiry.

When Shekhar came to know about his suspension, he locked himself in a room around 4pm and was found hanging from the ceiling fan. When I came to know about the incident, I sent the chief security officer of the campus to check.

He said that the campus security broke open his office door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan. Dean also added that the video statements of the complainants were also recorded.

Jammu SSP Chandan Kohli informed media that prima facie it was a suicide. The body has been sent for postmortem to be done by a board of doctors, he said. He said,
