Remember the young Bollywood singer composer Ankit Tiwari who became popular with several chartbusters prior to 2014? However, his success was short-lived after he made headlines when his then-girlfriend accused him of “rape on pretext of marriage”.
While Ankit was also arrested in the case, later in 2017, the Mumbai Sessions Court had cleared all charges against him and his brother due to lack of evidence.
His Story
In his recent interview with Navbharat Times Online, Ankit elaborated how his life completely changed after the “rape” charges. He also spoke about how industry people gradually ‘stopped working with him and removed him from several projects without any reason’.
However, Ankit said that there were indeed some people who stood by him during that tough phase in his life. He quoted,
When such phases arrive, very few people stand with you. There were some people in the industry who were with me, whom I actually call my family. Those with whom I have worked were also in my support.
It is said that when all the doors are closed, God keeps one gate open. The same happened to me. When all the doors were closed, one gate was open. I left from there too. I have come a long way now.
Ankit also shared how his career came to a halt as people withdrew him from many projects without any reason. He said,
People stopped working together, pulled their hands back. Without giving any reason, they withdrew me from many projects. Most of my work which was in the finishing stage was also closed. I lost so much.
But that doesn’t mean I gave up. I have been doing something. This year also my film ‘Badhaai Do’ came out. There are some other projects too.
Ankit’s Statement (in 2014)
Ankit was dating an advertising professional and the two wanted to get married. According to a leading daily back then, the singer was quoted as saying,
I was seeing her for a year and I even got her to meet my parents. But when we found that she was a divorcee and she had a kid, my parents did not want me to continue with the relationship. I am being framed here. All the charges made by her are false and baseless.
Ankit’s lawyer Neeraj Gupta in defense then said that it was an attempt by the victim to extort money from his client. Gupta noted that she wanted Tiwari to pay her Rs 3 crore. He said,
If the victim’s story is true, why was she silent till now? When she learnt that Ankit has made it big, she demanded money from him. But when he refused to pay her, she filed a false complaint against my clients.
Complainant Woman’s Statement Post Acquittal
Ankit’s former girlfriend made a complete U-turn on her story, and post his acquittal said that she was pressurised and threatened to take back the case. Speaking to India Today in 2017, she quoted,
When Ankit was nothing I supported him. I was at that time VP of one international company and earned like anything. He begged me and for his career I let it go. However now all the limits are crossed and I will take the case forward.

Ankit used to compose jingles for ads before his break composing music for the Rishi Kapoor – Neetu Kapoor 2010 film Do Dooni Chaar. He went on to compose and sing for films like Aashiqui 2, Singham Returns, and PK, before the controversy that he got embroiled into.
Ankit was arrested by Mumbai Police in May 2014 after his girlfriend accused him of ‘raping’ her on pretext of marriage. After his acquittal in 2017, he got married to Pallavi Shukla in 2018 and the couple has a daughter.
The singer-composer eventually returned to Bollywood and his voice was last heard in Bandi Tot, a song from the recently-released film Badhaai Do.
