Here’s What Happened
13-year-old Bala Manikandan, a student in Puducherry’s Karaikal died after consuming a cold drink, allegedly poisoned by his classmates’ mother.
According to Bala’s father Rajendran, a worker at a fair price shop in Karaikal, his son went to school for the annual day rehearsal programme on Saturday, however, when he returned home in the afternoon, he started vomiting.
Bala informed his parents that he had been vomiting since he drank cold drink the school watchman gave him, said his father. The young boy was immediately admitted to Karaikal Government Hospital where he died during treatment.
School’s Response & CCTV Footage
The school told the parents that Bala drank cold drink sent by them, however, the father denied saying,
We did not give our son any cold drink before he left school.
When Bala’s parents enquired with the watchman Devadhas, he informed them of a person claiming to be Bala Manikandan’s relative, who had given him the drink to be given to Bala.
When the CCTV footage was checked, that the person who gave the drink was Sagayarani Victoriya, whose daughter also studied in the same class that of Bala.
The victim’s mother Malathi then lodged a complaint at Karaikal city police station, alleging that Sagayarani Victoriya poisoned the drink. Subsequently, Sagayarani has been arrested.
Motive
According to a report by The News Minute, Bala’s parents informed the school management that there was some rivalry between Sagayarani’s daughter and their son, and that there had been a conflict between the two. His parents alleged that Sagayarani poisoned the cold drinks so that the daughter of the accused woman could secure the first rank in the class.
According to another report by Times Now, Sagayarani has confessed to the crime and revealed that she could not tolerate that Bala had been consistently doing better than her daughter academically in school and therefore out of jealousy she decided to poison him.
Police are also trying to ascertain whether the accused woman acted alone or there were other people involved in the conspiracy.
