A young woman from Kolkata had filed an FIR of gangrape last week accusing two men, including her former boyfriend. According to the FIR, the woman alleged that she was gangraped inside a moving car after being given soft drinks possibly laced with sedatives by at least two men.
The Kolkata police immediately started an investigation and unearthed further details in the matter.
Case:
The alleged victim in the case is a 24-year-old woman who is an aspiring actor. She accused her former boyfriend and another man of gangraping her in a moving car on the night of December 4, 2023.
According to her statement, she said that her former boyfriend had called her asking her to join him on a long drive on last Monday. After taking her to several places, she passed out inside the car when they were somewhere near EM Bypass. She accused both the men of subsequently gang raping her in the moving car at Anandpur (Eastern Kolkata).
Counter FIR
After two days of her FIR, the police received a counter complaint from the former friend of the complainant, who alleged that he had been kidnapped and kept confined in a flat in a highrise in the city. During the investigation, the police found more weightage in the abduction story of the ex-boyfriend.
Police Statement
Speaking with TOI, Joint CP (crime and organization) Syed Waquar Raza, said:
A professional driver, one Souvik Das Mal alias Sunny (34), was arrested in the kidnapping case pertaining to Netaji Nagar police station registered on December 6.
The accused has been sent to 10 days of police custody.
In her original statement, the woman had informed police that she was raped in the presence of the car driver. However, the arrested driver was present at the place of kidnapping (the former boyfriend) and had played an active role in calling, detaining and drugging the victim and his driver.
After driver Souvik was nabbed, he confessed that he was present when the rape ‘victim’ and her close friend called over the rape ‘accused’ and his driver to a Netaji Nagar flat, where the duo was assaulted and confined.
Kept Roaming Around In Car Of The “Accused”
Souvik further revealed that after they kidnapped the former friend and his driver, they (woman, her close friend and himself) left the flat, took the car belonging to the ‘rape accused’ and kept roaming in the city before going to the police with her complaint.
According to TOI, Souvik’s version is being verified and the car has been sent for forensic examination. Sources said Souvik was hired by the woman’s friend, who is still at large. Joint CP further informed TOI:
Souvik also confessed to having driven the car in which the complainant had alleged that the gang-rape had taken place. As per Souvik’s statement, he had not found the rape accused (the kidnapping victim) at any point in the said car at Anandapur.
His statement is being corroborated with other evidences.
The woman’s close friend is said to be involved in a fraud amounting to Rs 7 crore in Mumbai and has currently fled out of West Bengal to another state.
With regards to the alleged gangrape accusation, the cops told TOI:
We are still searching for evidence that can collaborate the rape incident. The medical examination of the woman has been completed, and the woman is being questioned based on the claims made by Souvik.
