Marriages may be crumbling within months/few years in today’s times, but can that end the bond between a parent and a child? Sadly, while India only focuses on empowering women with privileges, it overlooks the welfare of a child, in custody cases.
In a tragic case reported from Kolkata, a man – who got divorced – ended his life after being fearful of losing custody of his daughter.
Background:
42-year-old Kamalesh Chatterjee worked as a senior security guard with an IT office in Salt Lake Sector V of Kolkata.
As per a report by TOI, Chatterjee, a resident of New Town Gouranganagar, got married in 2011 and subsequently got divorced in 2019. The couple had a minor daughter and the duo were embroiled in a bitter custody battle.
According to his colleagues, Chatterjee had recently lost the custody battle which made him restless.

Suicide
Kamalesh, a father who had been alienated from his child, died of self-inflicted injuries on Saturday, after he smashed his head against the mirror in the washroom. The incident happened inside Webel Bhawan shortly after he had joined the office around 9am.
Kamalesh was known to be a calm headed person but his colleagues said he looked upset and restless from the moment he came to office on Saturday. Speaking with TOI, a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said,
Witnesses said he was looking distressed and was sweating since he came to join duty. He opened his shirt and soon lost his cool and began smashing things around him and got into a scuffle with colleagues.
Soon, he locked himself in a washroom and began breaking things inside. By the time, our team reached the spot and opened the door to bring him out, he was bleeding profusely.

Cops said multiple policemen had to overpower him before they could take him to Bidhannagar sub divisional hospital. He died at the hospital after around 40 minutes. The officer added,
An unnatural death case has been initiated and we have sent his body for post mortem to know whether he died of the injuries or had suffered a cerebral stroke.
VFMI Take:
- Most progressive jurisdictions globally have adopted Shared Parenting as a norm for separated/divorced couples
- However, India is yet to formulate a law in this aspect (Read article at the end)
- Currently, the custody laws are so weak in India, that even after the court orders permission to the fathers to meet their child, custodial parent (mothers) are openly defying the same
- A child is not some object, that its ‘custody’ be granted to either sides
- A child needs love, affection and guidance from both parents equally, even if they have parted ways
- Most children who are brought up in the presence of Single Parent are low on confidence, end up on wrong paths in life or even become drug addicts
- Such children are always brainwashed with victimhood, making him/her believe that the non-custodial parent (most often the father) is a monster
- Children are also used as pawns in divorce battles, to extort more money from the husband, without allowing him access to see or speak with his child over a video call
- Mainstream media does not report such inhuman practices against the men
- Its time, we as a society, become vocal and question every self proclaimed “Single Mom” – about the absence of father in her child’s life
