The NRI Coastal police have arrested a 19-year-old house help and her family along with a social worker for extorting Rs 14 lakh from her employer in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, after filing an alleged false rape case.
The teenager had accused a 43-year-old software engineer of raping her on October 18.
Case:
On October 18, Prajakta Tripathi (38), a resident of Ulwe, had hired a 19-year-old woman as house help and on the same day asked her to accompany her husband to the market.
Later in the day, the help approached NRI Coastal police and registered a case of rape against Tripathi claiming that he had given her spiked drink and raped her in his car for an hour, following which he was arrested. The maid had been employed to take care of his bedridden mother.
The man has been lodged in Taloja jail since then.
Police Investigation
Soon after, the man’s wife approached the police with the recording of a telephonic conversation with a social worker supporting the rape complainant. The wife claimed that the social worker had demanded Rs 14 lakh to withdraw the rape case.
A police laid a trap was laid and caught five people – the social worker, the teenager, her mother, brother and uncle –accepting Rs 2.50 lakh as initial payment from the wife of the rape accused, reported TOI.
All five are in police custody till Saturday.
Senior inspector Ravindra Patil said that the five people have been arrested on the basis of CCTV footage of a sweet mart in Ulwe where the teenager had gone with the man. Speaking to the media, Patil quoted,
She’s seen having snacks, but did not fall unconscious. Later, they went to a cutlery store and then to her brother’s house where she took a mattress needed to stay at the man’s house where she was to take care of his mother. So, she was lying that she fell unconscious for an hour after having snacks and that she was sexually assaulted.
With regards to the release of the falsely accused man, Patil said,
Tripathi is still in our custody and we would soon file a ‘B’ Summary report in court for the case being a false one.
