Shobha Tomar, wife of Dr BS Tomar, Chancellor of National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has been arrested on Tuesday on charges of blackmailing and extortion in false rape case.
This arrest comes after police arrested two other persons on Monday in a related matter.
Dr Tomar has been charged in a rape case, lodged against him in 2015. Couple of days ago, police arrested two persons who posed as journalists and extorted Rs 25 lakh from Tomar in the same false rape case.
Ajay Pal Lamba, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) informed media:
Based on the investigation, Shobha Tomar, wife of the chancellor was arrested for blackmailing and extortion. Dr Tomar had lodged a case of blackmailing against his wife, his son and ten other persons at Ashok Nagar police station which was under investigation since a long time. After getting corroborating evidence, the woman has been arrested.
In October 2019, Dr Tomar had accused his wife Shobha, son Anurag, BB Agarwal, Rajesh Badhoria, Ajeet Badoria, Neha Khan, Bir Singh, Pooran Singh Rao, Mintu Yadav, Dhananjay Singh, Jitendra Unial and others for blackmailing him to a tune of Rs 15 crore after implicating him in a false rape case.
Ranchi police had arrested Dr Tomar from Jaipur in September 2016. A case of sexual harassment under Section 376/511 of the IPC had been lodged against him at a Mahila police station, Ranchi, in 2015. A student had alleged that Tomar called her at a private hotel in Ranchi where she was sexually assaulted.
A local court sent Prof B S Tomar, chairman of NIMS University of Jaipur, to jail in connection with the attempt to rape and molestation case.
The court rejected Tomar’s bail and ordered that doctors be made available to him in jail, since he was accused of serious charges.
Later, Dr Tomar was granted bail by the court of Special Judge MC Verma on the ground of improbabilities emerging out of the version of the girl during the statements recorded before the police. Petitioner’s counsel Bishwajeet Mukherjee then said,
He was granted bail as there were no serious allegations against my client.
