On Tuesday night, a Zomato Food App user, Amit Shukla tweeted about cancelling his placed order, since his designated rider was a “Non-Hindu”. The tweet which now stands deleted read,
Just cancelled an order on @ZomatoIN they allocated a non hindu rider for my food they said they can’t change rider and can’t refund on cancellation I said you can’t force me to take a delivery I don’t want don’t refund just cancel.
At present, the pious month of Shravan is going on and it is a matter of my personal choice.
However, what is seen as one of the strongest responses by a corporate in recent times, the company stood its ground and refused to change the delivery executive. The official handle of Zomato India replied stating,
Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.
Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal too echoed his company’s stand with a firm message.
We are proud of the idea of India – and the diversity of our esteemed customers and partners. We aren’t sorry to lose any business that comes in the way of our values.

Goyal, in an internal message to his team at Zomato, had applauded the customer team for “upholding our values and not discriminate on basis of caste or religion for sake of growth (or customer satisfaction)”.
News and Media Portal, The Wire Hindi interviewed some of the Zomato boys today and this is what they had to say about the controversy and their daily routine in general.
This is the first time we have experienced such a thing based on religion with a customer. Many a times we also deliver Vegetarian food to a Muslim Customer
Tomorrow if a Muslim is celebrating his festival, and he says No to a Hindu rider, how would it feel?
This is discrimination against each other……this is poisoning the minds of people. This is wrong, you can’t compare food with all this
There are 10% customers who are difficult. Sometimes post 9pm if the elevator has shut down, many customers ask us to climb upto 10th floor and deliver and we do that.
Customers even abuse us sometimes. They shout from their window on the 8th floor, asking us to climb up the staircase if the lift is not working…..and then there are some customers who tell us, we are coming down to take it…..
We are in customer service job, we have to listen to everything.
Customers should just understand one thing, that we are on the road in extreme heat for you as well and not just for us, so they should also be a little considerate and treat us like humans, not animals
If there is an issue with any customer, we inform the customer care at Zomato
We do around 25 rides daily @Rs 35/- per ride. We earn around Rs 18-20k a month. If we do more rides, we get paid more
At the end of the day, we are only humans, not Hindus and Muslims
