62-year-old woman living in Ramganj locality of Jaipur, Rajasthan, was set on fire by her daughter-in-law and her mother. The family of the elderly victim has lodged a complaint, basis which an FIR has been lodged.
Case:
Hema, daughter of the victim woman Chandrakanta, has filed a complaint against her brother’s wife Ketika, accusing her and her mother of attempt to murder. Hema informed police that her parents had been keeping ill since quite some time. After a domestic dispute, her brother and sister-in-law started living in a house opposite to theirs.
On July 12, Chandrakanta was at home as her son invited her to come over to his place for some time. After he left, the mother went to her room in the son’s house to take rest. At this time, Ketika switched off the cooler which was running in her mother-in-law’s room and lit a matchstick on Chandrakanta’s clothes. The daughter-in-law even took her mother’s help in this gruesome act.
Attempt to Murder
Ketika closed the cooler of the room where her mother-in-law was sleeping and left a burning matchstick on her clothes. After the mother-in-law was almost burnt, the daughter-in-law fled with her mother. The elderly woman suffered severe burns (60%) and is now being looked after by her own daughter, Hema. Incidentally, the son has been absconding too.

After hearing her mother’s scream, Hema ran to her room and alarmed the neighbours, when then rushed her SMS Hospital. From there, the victim was admitted to a private hospital in Malviya Nagar. Chandrakanta’s lower body was severely burnt and could not recover due to high sugar.
Subsequently, Hema lodged a complaint against her sister-in-law and her mother at Ramganj police station and next day the police filed the report.
Background
Hema’s brother got married to Ketika, a resident of Ambala in 2019. Fights amongst family members became a normal at home since the day the two married. The daughter-in-law had also filed a case of dowry harassment against her mother-in-law and her husband. The matter had reached court.
Chandrakanta owned two houses, and in 2021, the family reached an agreement that the son and daughter-in-law would shift to the other house, which was right in front of theirs. The husband’s mother and father started living alone, while daughter Hema would come to their house to give them tea, food and other help.
While dowry deaths are acknowledged and accounted for in India, horrific attacks on husbands and their families are far from being reported in the mainstream media.
