Incidents like the below make us believe in the power of media, particularly the digital media in today’s times. On August 16, online portal, The News Minute published a story on the murder of a father in Tamil Nadu who is now survived by wife and three children (two girls, aged 15 and 13, and a boy aged 12).
In May this year, 35-year-old Manikandan’s eldest daughter had gone to relieve herself near the river bank and had come running back home in tears, alleging that she was sexually harassed by a young man standing there. The father had then rushed out of his house to the Vaigai river bank in a towering rage. He went straight to the culprit, Mageshwaran, and gave him a tight slap on the cheek. While the alleged accused immediately apologised and said that it won’t happen again, Manikandan warned the harasser and let him go. He decided that he should give Mageshwaran a chance and didn’t go to the police immediately, since the boy was only 21-years-old and the father thought his life would get ruined.
Three months later, on August 13, Manikandan was found dead outside his house in a pool of blood. His face was unrecognisable from the deep cuts administered by sharp weapons and the food he was bringing back home was splattered across the road. He was murdered by Mageshwaran and two others who wanted to teach him a lesson. The accused have now been arrested.
Dhanya Rajendran, Editor-in-chief, The News Minute had posted this story on Twitter last week, which caught lot of attention.

Out of all responses, Deepika Bhardwaj, Mens Rights Activist, re-posted the story and also posed a question if something could be done for the family. She said she was infuriated and wanted to pitch in financially for the young children.
A young father, Manikandan, has been murdered in Tamil Nadu by a boy who he slapped few months ago, for sexually harassing his daughter. The man is survived by his wife and three children – two daughters and a son. Heart goes out when one reads sickening incidents like this.

The News Minute responded to this initiative and promptly started an online campaign to raise money for basic needs of the family including rent, education and living expenses.
