COVID-19 has impacted almost every single living being globally. If we are spared from medical hassles, we may be suffering from mental or physical stress due to loss of employment, loss of income, family problems, domestic abuse, amongst others.
The Gautam Budh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh witnessed seven suicides in the past 24-hours as per a TOI report dated March 31, 2021. The victims included a male software engineer, couple of other men residing in nearby villages, a housewife, a 20-year-old girl, among others.
Tabrez Khan, 45-year-old software engineer lived in Ajnara Heritage Society, located in the Sector-39 police station area. He hanged himself from the fan of his house. He worked in a Gurugram-based company. He had recently prepared a project for his company, which was rejected and due to this, he was under a lot of stress.
Parthavi Chandra, a 20-year-old girl who lived in Noida Sector 119’s Aldico Invitation Society, hanged herself from the ceiling fan on Monday night. She died in the hospital during treatment.
In another incident, 28-year-old Bhima of the Loharli village in Thana Dadri area, died by suicide.
Dharmendra Mishra (40), residing in the Baraula village of Thana Sector-49 area, allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan. He allegedly couldn’t cope with the extreme mental stress he was in.
In yet another case, a 40-year-old woman, Geeta Devi, who lived in the Wajidpur village also died by suicide on Monday night.
Prakash Haldar (30), who lived in the police station Sector-20 area, also ended his life.
In the seventh case, a man named Satpal, who lived in Sector 49, killed himself allegedly due to mental stress.
The repercussions of pandemic has not differentiated between genders, age, religion or status of people. However, it becomes extremely unfortunate, when certain sections of media, NGOs, women centric portals are constantly pushing the narrative of how only and only women have been impacted and how they need more upliftment.
This farce of seeing gender amidst COVID-19 needs to be called out. As a society, what is required is to help each other and rise as a whole, instead of furthering divide citing gender disparity.
