Dowry is a curse and menace, well agreed. But how do we label expectations of the bride and her family along with the demands made in the name of customs and rituals?
In a recent story reported from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, a bride refused to marry after she learnt that the ornaments gifted to her by her in-laws were artificial.
Here’s What Happened!
The incident took place in Birhar village in Saadh police area of Ghatampur town. The ‘baraat’ had arrived from Bidhnoo area of the Kanpur district.
According per TOI, the baraat was welcomed and gifts were exchanged. However, the bride’s side grew suspicious about the purity of the ornaments that were gifted by groom’s family to the girl.
The bride’s side then involved a family friend who was a jeweller, to authenticate if the ornaments were real or artificial. The family friend later confirmed that that ornaments gifted to the bride were imitation jewelry.
Marriage Stalled, Negotiations Began
The groom’s family tried their best to convince the bride and her family, however, the girl flatly refused to get married.
Police Was Called In
After a while, when the police intervened and a panchayat was held, the groom’s side promised to give her original jewellery, and only after this pressure, the bride agreed for ‘vidai’ ceremony and left for her in-laws’ place.
Saadh station house officer Mansoor Ahmad told TOI,
Situation became tense after the bride’s side found that they were being gifted artificial jewellery by the groom’s family after the ‘saat pheras’. In a fit of rage, the bride walked out of the mandap.
He added,
On coming to know about the incident, the police reached the spot and pacified the two sides.
The SHO said both sides later reached an agreement. He also said,
When the groom’s side promised to give her original jewellery, the girl left for her in-laws’ place in the late evening hours.
Leave your thoughts on this manipulation by Bride & her family.
If the matter was reversed and demand would have been made from the Groom’s side, he and his entire family would have been arrested. However, in the case above, the negotiations were held after the intervention of police.
