An army man died of suicide on Friday in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
Retired Fauji Arvind Balyan, a resident of Sant Vihar in Kankarkheda police station area, lived with his wife Shalu and two children. He was employed in the traffic department in Delhi. According to the investigation officer Bijendra Singh Rana, Arvind had a dispute with his wife over a minor issue.
The angry wife went to her maternal home in Ganpati Vihar at Satna Road along with the children. Depressed by this, Arvind hanged himself by the ceiling fan. The police reached the spot, took the body down and sent it for postmortem. CO Daurala Jitendra Sargam said no suicide note had been recovered and the police was investigating the case.
In another shocking incident reported from the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat, last week a man attempted suicide by jumping from the balcony after a quarrel with his wife over the lunch menu. According to a report in Times of India, the man was saved after neighbours from his residential colony gathered at the spot and pulled him to safety.
In the video that has gone viral on social media, the man could be seen hanging from his balcony with neighbours attempting to rescue him. The man was suspended in the air for nearly 20 seconds and was finally pulled up to safety.
In yet another incident reported from Uttar Pradesh on April 9, a man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room as he was missing his wife stuck at her parents’ place due to the lockdown, police said.
The incident took place in Radha Kund locality in Gonda, they said, adding the deceased had been identified as Rakesh Soni, 32. As per information, Soni’s wife had gone to her parents’ place and was stuck there due to the lockdown and he was missing her due to which he committed suicide, Inspector Alok Rao said.
None of the above incidents will ever be recorded by any government agency as ‘Domestic abuse on husbands’ or husband deaths.
