Remember the infamous SDM Jyoti Maurya case from Uttar Pradesh last year? Now a similar case from Begusarai in Bihar has come to light where a woman abandoned her husband as soon as she found a government job.
These incidents may not represent all women, but surely trigger red flags for several men who are dedicatedly striving to give a better life for their family, while making their wives independent.
Case:
Vijay Kumar (32) got married to Roshni Kumari (29) on June 15, 2013.
Post marriage, the couple had been living a peaceful life, when Xth pass Roshni requested her husband that she wanted to study further. Since the husband was not financially well off, he started working as a labourer to fulfil his wife’s dream of acquiring higher education.
In 2022, the wife got a job as a constable with Bihar police and in October the same year, Roshni had to leave for her training. While the wife was away, communication between the couple reduced.
After the wife completed her training, she was posted at Gaya district police station as a constable and this is when she informed her husband that she did not wish to continue co-habitation with him any further. On hearing this, Vijay was left completely shattered.
Roshni had arrived at Vijay’s home with her father, brother and some relatives and demanded that all the dowry given should be returned to her immediately as she wanted to give him a divorce.
According to Vijay, Roshni was not only seeking what she had brought with her at the time of marriage, but also the gifts given by his family to her during the wedding.
While the wife was now seeking divorce, the husband was adamant on not letting his wife leave him. As the arguments turned ugly, several local people intervened requesting them to sort the matter amicably. By now, the police had to calm them down and later the matter reached court.
Speaking with ETV Bharat, the husband said:
My wife has found a job as a police constable so she is leaving us today. When I got married, she had just passed her Xth grade. It was me who worked hard to get her where she is.
In 2022, there was a vacancy in Bihar Police which she cleared. And now she is asking for divorce. I am a Hindu man and believe that our relationship is for seven lives. I do not want to end this marriage.
Husband’s mother further added:
My daughter-in-law wants to leave my son. They have been married for 11-12 years. We do not understand why does she want to leave us now? Is it because she has secured a job for herself?

Voice For Men India Take:
- Marriages are no more about love, sacrifice or companionship
- Marriages today have become extremely transactional and women have an upper hand in calling the shots
- A spouse is justified to leave the other if he/she has been in an abusive relationship, but should anyone be encouraged to dump their spouse because he/she has found a better prospect in life?
- Wives can unilaterally decide when to dump their husbands and also when to trap them by not giving divorce – as it suits them
- Literally, Indian husbands, particularly the Hindu men have been reduced to puppets thanks to our lopsided laws
- Feminism in older times was about women struggling for education or fighting against not being allowed to work
- Infact, most families of women today also, do not believe in educating their daughters beyond a point and transfer their responsibility on other men by marrying them off at an early age
- On the other hand, younger men today are not patriarchal, they want to empower their wives, they want to give them equal status and thus many of them go that extra mile to make their wives achieve their dreams – those dreams which were crushed by the wife’s own family in her parental home
- Sadly, cases like these will reverse the trend of progressive thinking and once again, thanks to women like Roshni, other husbands will not support higher education for wives in the future
- Voice For Men India strongly advocates for equal standing of both husband and wife in a matrimonial relationship, but the onus of maintaining equality must lie on both spouses without bias
- While every husband is expected to be a Heera Thakur, every wife should also be expected of being just and fair in a marriage, particularly after tasting success
- Will our courts order the wife to pay lifelong maintenance to her husband in this case without divorce?
- In reality, equality is not really about being equal
- When a man earns, he earns for his family; When a woman earns, she questions as to why does she need any man in her family!
