In a story reported from Tamil Nadu, a 12-year-old boy was arrested by the Tanjavur All Women Police after a 17-year-old girl gave birth to a girl after being allegedly raped by the boy.
The minor boy was held under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. However, when contacted, the police at Tanjavur All Women Police station told IANS that even though the girl had named the 12-year-old boy, the police are investigating whether anyone else was involved in it.
Case:
According to the police, both of them are school dropouts and live in the same neighbourhood.
The girl’s parents admitted her to Raja Mirasudar government hospital on April 16 after she developed a stomach pain. When the doctors examined her, they realised she was nine months pregnant. She gave birth to a girl child the same day.
On being informed by the hospital, the all-women police held an inquiry session with the girl. As she pointed at the boy, police booked him under POCSO Act Section 5 (1) and 5 (j) (ii) read with Sec 6 and arrested him. He has been sent to a juvenile home in Thanjavur.
Police inspector Ravimathi told TOI that the girl and her parents feigned ignorance of her pregnancy till she delivered a baby. She added,
We are conducting a DNA test on the boy to ascertain his age and to find out whether he is the biological father of the child.
Tanjavur All Women Police inspector, Ravimathi told IANS that the police are conducting a detailed investigation and have questioned the parents of the girl.
