According to the latest NCRB Report 2019 that recorded number of rapes in the state of Uttar Pradesh, 57% of cases pertain to rape on pretext of marriage or rape on false promise of marriage.
The bifurcation of balance 43% was where 37% of the perpetrators were known to the victim, while 6% were unknown.
According to Uttar Pradesh additional director general of police, prosecution, Ashutosh Pandey, the data shows a unique trend where maximum cases of rapes have been committed by the acquaintances of survivors. Pandey urged women not to remain mum and speak up against such crimes as this will increase the reportage and conviction rates for perpetrators.
Speaking to TOI, additional DGP quoted:
UP had the highest conviction rate of 55% in cases of crime against women, followed by 50% in Uttarakhand and 45.5% in Rajasthan.
Our Take:
- Rape is one of the most heinous crimes globally and certainly there should be no tolerance for the convicts in such cases
- However, ‘rape on promise of marriage’ is extremely different as compared to the horrendous act in real
- In most cases, where rapes are reported citing promise of marriage, the relationships are consensual, both parties are adults who are fully aware of the dire consequences if either side backs out from marriage
- Nonetheless, a woman is completely pardoned if she chooses to end a relationship with her partner and not proceed with marriage, but when a man dares to do the same for various reasons — largely citing compatibility issues — he can be charged for rape by his ex-partner
- As a system, we must deliberate whether it is just to equate crimes such as rape to acts of mutual sexual relationships going kaput
- 57% is an alarming number in a state like Uttar Pradesh
- There have been cases, where ‘rape on pretext of marriage’ has been used as a tool to settle score or compel a man to get married after the woman voluntarily chose to be in a live-in relationship
- As a society, whenever we read rape statistics, we get agitated, however, we often overlook several such parameters which are highly different than the brutal crime that we are discussing here
Recently, DGP Rajasthan too had expressed his views on the increasing rates of false rapes in his state.
