Deafening Silence Of Twitter Feminists Over Sanjay Raut's 'H@ramkhor Kangana' Remark

Kangana Ranaut, who raised her voice demanding #JusticeForSushantSinghRajput, has been successful in diverting the entire matter about herself and her security.

On Thursday, the Bollywood actor slammed Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut for ‘openly threatening’ her not to come to Mumbai after she had raised objections over the Aazadi graffitis on the streets of Mumbai. Taking to Twitter, Kangana then said that Mumbai seems like ‘Pakistan occupied Kashmir’, after she was asked not to return to Mumbai.

Kangana in her response claimed that ‘no one’s father’ could stop her from coming to Mumbai.

Responding to Kangana’s comment, senior Shiv Sena leader who also runs party’s editorial, Saamna, quoted:

Maharashtra ka baap Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hai... Mujhe lagata hai asa vakti ke baap ko idhar la kar dikahana padega.. aapka baap dikhaye agar hai toh…..Kya hota hai kaanoon……aap kya woh h@raamkhor ladki ki wakaalat kar rahe hai!

[Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the father of Maharashtra …Kangana needs to first show who her father is….Why are you taking side of such a woman (slang)]

Not just this, Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik also quoted that party’s women workers will slap Ranaut when she arrives in Mumbai and he was willing to go to jail for that.

Now coming to our hyper active Twitter feminists, who would tweet on almost even a sneeze of misogyny, have somehow gone completely silent over such harsh remarks by Raut and his party. Lets begin!

Sena scion Aditya Thackeray recently took to twitter implying how his party was making Mumbai roads safer for women. And he is doing so by adding images of women pedestrians on traffic signals and signages. On August 1, Aditya tweeted,

If you’ve passed by Dadar, you’d see something that will make you feel proud. @mybmcWardGN is ensuring gender equality with a simple idea- the signals now have women too! pic.twitter.com/8X0vJR8hvQ

— Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) August 1, 2020

Next in line is Priyanka Chaturvedi, Rajya Sabha MP who represents Shiv Sena. In April 2019, former Congress national spokesperson resigned from the party and joined the Shiv Sena. The development had come two days after she expressed her displeasure with the Congress for reinstating some leaders who had misbehaved with her at a press briefing. While addressing the media in Mumbai then, Chaturvedi said,

I have always been vocal about women’s empowerment and safety. But I was trolled and abused. My family was threatened. I was sad when I saw a few party leaders attack me. They were suspended earlier by the party. But by reinstating them later, I felt let down. I realised that I will fail several women if I continue.

Lets move on to Alka Lamba, now with the Indian National Congress. During her stint with AAP in 2015, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA OP Sharma was suspended from the Delhi Assembly for two days for using ‘objectionable’ language against Lamba during a discussion in the House. Targetting Lamba, BJP legislator was heard saying,

Ye toh Raat Bhar ghumne wali (She roams all night).

However, Alka has chosen to remain absolutely mum over h@ramkhor remark.

Mahua Moitra, who had promptly tweeted questioning Bihar DGP for using derogatory language against Rhea Chakraborty in August this year, has also been mum on Raut’s attack on a woman. Moitra who often projects herself as an empowered woman had written,

“Aukat”? Since when is it okay for the leading IPS officer of a state to refer to a lady in this primitive entitled manner no matter what the context? Need language lessons or lessons in civility, Sir?

— Mahua Moitra (@MahuaMoitra) August 19, 2020

Not a word from Mahua on Sena’s minsogynst attack.

All of the above can be overlooked because of their political affiliations, nonetheless, we cannot ignore how feminism is a mere tool used when it suits them!

Now lets move on to some other twitter feminists who have chosen to look the other way as well:

Kanchan Srivastava, journalist, who was the first one to tweet about Bihar DGP video on Rhea Chakraborty, has not tweeted anything about the remark on Kangana.

Can we expect the National Women Commision issuing sommon to Bihar DGP for his sexist remarks? @sharmarekha https://t.co/PvPv9KIGHW

— Kanchan Srivastava (@Ms_Aflatoon) August 19, 2020

On September 4, Kanchan was seen tweeting a sarcastic video of Kangana attending Mumbai police function.

Sonam Feminist Kapoor, who calls out sexism at the drop of her hat, has been away from Twitter for past few days and we could not see her tweeting anything on the Raut fiasco. In 2015, when Maharashtra was governed by the BJP, Sonam had roped in misogyny even in a four day meat ban debate. She had then tweeted,

Our country is going to remain a 3rd world nation because of the intolerant misogynistic close minded few.

— Sonam Kapoor (@sonamakapoor) September 8, 2015

Swara Bhasker, who has made comments such as “Bollywood is as sexist as our fathers are”  or who wrote an open letter titled Stalker Sexism, has gone mum on Sena’s comments. Infact, Bhasker had lauded Rhea for replying to Bihar DGP on his aukat comment. Swara has also supported the accused in SSR case, by comparing her trial worse than that of Mumbai attacks convict Kasab.

I don’t think even #Kasab was subjected to the kind of witch-hunt on media.. & media trial that #RheaChakrobarty is being subjected to! Shame on Indian Media.. Shame on us for being a toxic voyueristic public consuming this poisonous hysteria.. #RheaDrugChat #SushantSinghRajput

— Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) August 26, 2020

Taapsee Pannu who went on a spree promoting her January release Thappad, based on how wives should walk out of an abusive marriage, has zero comments on Shiv Sena’s attack on a woman. She too has been tweeting her support for the accused woman constantly, but not a word on comments over Kangana.

— Runjhun Sharma (@Runjhunsharmas) September 7, 2020

Thappad’s director, Anubhav Sinha and co-actor Dia Mirza, though have publicly expressed their displeasure towards Raut’s comment.
Vidya Balan openly came out in support of accused Rhea Chakraborty in the name of womanhood, however, she has failed to condemn comments over Kangana. Here what Vidya tweeted recently:
Vidya Balan on Rhea Chakraborty Trial
Javed Akhtar, who had penned a blog on ‘Everyday Sexism In Parliament’ in 2015, has been missing from Twitter since August 27. His son, Farhan, who runs a social media campaign named MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) has always been on the forefront of calling out sexism. He too has shied away from being vocal against comments on Kangana.

A5: Small everyday actions like calling out sexism at home or the workplace, standing up against street harassment, questioning people’s entrenched gender biases will go a long way into creating #equalityeveryday @thebetterindia @FarOutAkhtar @PopFoundIndia

— MARD (@MardOfficial) February 25, 2020

Shabana Azmi, women rights champion, has also decided to remain mum on comments against Kangana. Here are a few times when Azmi has called out sexism, but has refrained from commenting on h@ramkhor matter this time.
In 2017, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap had given a detailed interview to Gulf news on how ‘gender inequality is being bridged in his male-driven Bollywood industry’. However, he has not uttered a word on the comment towards one of the leading female stars in the industry.
Neither Twinkle Khanna, who runs a feminist portal, TweakIndia, nor her husband, Akshay Kumar, who promotes empowerment of women through his movies, have spoken a word on this controversy.
Sona Mohapatra, self proclaimed crusader of sexism and misogyny, has gone mum on the comment over Kangana. None of the other #MeToo twitter handles have either condemned or called out Shiv Sena.
As far as media feminists are concerned, neither Barkha Dutt who thought SSR investigation is minsogynst, has called out Raut, nor Faye D’souza who shaped her several Mirrow Now debates around sexism has spoken a word on this matter. Rohini Singh, Rana Ayub and Shehla Rashid, who all play woman card, are also silent.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut has tweeted his official response on the controversy today. He wrote,

Shiv Sena follows the ideology of great Hindutva icons Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Great Maharana Pratap. They have taught us to respect women. But some with malicious intentions are spreading misinformation that Shiv Sena has insulted women. But one should not forget the fact that those making these allegations have themselves insulted Mumbai and our deity Mumba Devi. Shiv Sena will continue to fight for the pride of women, this is what our great Shiv Sena supremo has taught us.

Our Take:

  • If you choose to stand up for women’s rights, it should be irrespective of your ideology
  • Feminism must not be turned into a political tool to frame someone and cry victim when you are attacked
  • Kangana, on the other side, has also used feminism to her advantage over the years and some of the language used by her and her sister Rangoli Chandel are equally condemnable
  • Ranaut has also been provided with Y security today after she tweeted a video of Bharat Ki Beti
  • In the bargain, while people in power get away with a battery of lawyers, common man suffers the most in the social media hype of fake feminism
