We have been hearing stories for several decades how daughters-in-law have been harassed in their in-laws’ home. However, often the other side of domestic violence, sometimes even murder, is rarely published by english mainstream media.
Three sisters, married in the same household, murdered their mother-in-law because they were allegedly troubled by their daily quarrels. The incident took place in Ramdevnagar Haralaya Village of Matoda in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan and as described by the accused, happened ‘in the heat of the moment’.
The old woman’s body was found hanging as informed by Matoda station in-charge, Neemram.
The 62-year-old victim, identified as Kamala Devi, wife of Damaram Meghwal had died on August 28. Matoda police, however, was informed about the incident only the next day, on August 29.
During the initial questioning, the accused women told investigating officers that the victim had hanged herself. However, the maternal side of the deceased raised suspicion of murder by the daughters-in-law and accused them that they could have strangled the elderly woman.
To clarify the matter, police sent the body of Kamala Devi for post-mortem. The results of the report indeed showed death by strangulation.
About Accused Sisters Cum Daughters-in-Law
On September 1, Matoda police arrested all three sisters, Premi, Oma, and Pintu. While Premi and Pintu are siblings, Oma is their cousin. All three of them had been married into the same household.
Incidentally, there was a fight amongst all four on the day of mother-in-law’s murder. However, the fights were a daily routine and not rare in their home.

According to Neemaram, all three daughters-in-law would indulge in daily disputes with Kamala Devi. Since one day when they could not bear the quarrels anymore, they decided to eliminate their mother-in-law in order to avoid everyday conflicts.
On August 28, the day of the murder, only these four women were present in their house. An altercation happened amongst them again and all three daughters-in-law pounced on the old woman and strangled her. Later, they staged it like a suicide by hanging the woman. All three accused have been brought to Jodhpur for questioning.
