The Gujarat high court in recently has ordered a married man to pay half the amount spent by the state government to trace a woman with whom he had eloped more than seven months ago. Both are adults.
Here’s What Happened
Raghabhai Parmar, a man in his late 20s, eloped with a 20-year-old woman from Rajkot city. Parmar reportedly disappeared with the woman in May 2021.
After being unable to trace his daughter, the father had approached the Gujarat High Court for help. The police then launched a search operation, which went on for seven months until the woman was finally traced and returned to her parents. During the investigation, the court learned that Parmar had been already married to someone else.
Gujarat High Court
In an unprecedented order, the high court has now decided to recover from Parmar the amount spent to trace and bring the woman back, reported TOI.
Rajkot Police informed the High Court that cops invested 17,170 hours during the seven-month long investigation. This was followed by 19 days of inquiry. They total amount spent was Rs 42,500.
In addition, the expenses incurred to remain physically present before the court was nearly Rs 75,000.
Thus, the total amount of Rs 11,17,500 was spent to bring the adult woman back to her family. The woman’s father told the court that he had personally spent Rs 8.06 lakh to trace his daughter.
The recovery order was also a punishment for eloping with the woman and exploiting her despite being married.
The high court allowed the father to claim the damages by approaching the appropriate court. The judges said they were concerned with the expenses incurred by police. The order read:
Though we could have although directed the entire amount to be paid by the petitioner, we deem it appropriate to direct 50% of the said amount which shall be sum of Rs 55,000.
Once Parmar pays the money, the court has ordered it to be deposited into the Police Welfare Fund, Rajkot City.
