Gujarat Husband Ends Life: “My Mother-in-Law Constantly Harassed Me For Alimony, Turned Me Into Servant”

A young man died of suicide in Bardoli’s Navdurga Society in Gujarat in the last week of June. However, before ending his life, the young man made a video on how his life had been ruined by his mother-in-law.

According to local report, 31-year-old Nilay Sanjaybhai Chaudhary was a resident of Navdurga Society, Bardoli, who hanged himself at home on June 26. The police initially registered a case of accidental death, after learning preliminary information from the family that Nilay ended his life since his wife did not return from her matrimonial home. 

However, later when the investigating officer checked the man’s phone, Nilay had left a video before deciding to take the extreme step. In the video, the man is heard saying, that his mother-in-law repeatedly demanded money and also ruined his life. Subsequently, husband’s mother Ramilaben Sanjaybhai Chaudhary lodged a complaint of abetment to suicide with the Bardoli police against her son’s mother-in-law Paruben Ganeshbhai Chaudhary.

In the video, the husband says,

My life has been ruined by my mother-in-law, she has ruined me for money, what can I do, I have lost my life, four years of marriage, three years apart, asked for Rs 2 Lakh…

I am lost in my life, I can’t find a job, I have to sleep on the road, I eat if I get money, my two gold rings are stolen. My mother-in-law who is hungry for money, turned me into a servant. I can’t find any fault of my parents, I have lost my life, I am tired of looking for work.

He added,

I haven’t slept for three days, think every day whether I should do it or not. Today my death is certain. Jai Siyaram.

With regards to divorce, Paruben also demanded Rs 5 lakh from Nilay’s family. Apart from this, it has been mentioned in the video that she had repeatedly insisted on additional Rs 2 lakh cash from Nilay. Ramilaben has alleged that Nilay ended his life only due to constant harassment by his mother-in-law.

In 2017, Nilay got married to Kaamini, daughter of Ganesh Suresh Chaudhary, who lives in 10 Gauchar Phalia. After the marriage, Kaamini often fell ill and went back to her parents’ home. On one occasion, when Nilay went to bring his wife and reached Kaamini’s house with his parents, his in-laws had a quarrel with his family. The husband stayed in his wife’s home for three months. According to his statement, his gold ring and watch were also stolen from his in-law’s home during this time of stay.

Alimony deaths in India are as real as Dowry deaths. However, the same never get reported because when a man dies of suicide, we term him to be weak who could not face life. The trauma and mental harassment several men go through due to gender biased laws is beyond the comprehension of anyone who does not face it themselves.

It does not matter whether you are a man or a woman – you must raise your voice against such injustice done to any gender in the name of politically correct statement of ’empowerment’.
