Nearly two and a half years after a businessman’s death in Panipat district of Haryana, the state police were able to crack the case and nab the real culprits. What was planned, what actually happened and how this case was painted as simple rivalry earlier…let us understand the facts in detail!

Case:
Vinod Barara ran a computer institute in Panipat. He was married to Nidhi Barara and the couple has a daughter.
Nidhi used to visit a local gym frequently where she got acquainted with a gym trainer named Sumit. Over a period of time, Nidhi and Sumit got close to each other and their association grew into a full blown affair.
Vinod had sensed that something was brewing between his wife and the gym trainer, and the couple would have frequent arguments, whenever he confronted her. On some occasions, Vinod even had face-offs with Sumit, where he had warned him to stay away from his wife.
When Vinod’s interference in his wife’s extra-marital affair did not stop, Nidhi and her paramour hatched a plot to eliminate the husband.

Husband Murder
On December 15, 2021, Vinod was shot dead at his home by a shooter named Dev Sunar. When the police arrested Sunar, he informed them that he was a truck driver by profession and there was an ongoing court case between him and Vinod, after he had injured the latter seriously in an accident. Sunar had confessed to his crime stating that he murdered Vinod, because he had refused for an out-of-court settlement in that accident case.
Once Sunar was arrested and sent to jail, the case was almost dead and closed.
Twist in Murder Tale
Nearly after two and a half years of Vinod’s death, the District Police Chief and IPS Officer Ajit Singh Shekhawat receives a whatsapp message, asking him to re-look in this murder case.
This message was sent by none other but Vinod’s brother Pramod, who lives in Australia. Pramod informed the officer that he was suspicious how the mastermind of his brother’s murder was someone close to him. When Shekhawat scanned the case files once again properly, he too sensed that something was amiss.

Case Re-Opens
Deepak Kumar, a senior officer from Haryana police’s Criminal Investigation Agency was given charge to look into the case from the start. While analysing every character linked to Vinod, the police came across a connection between murder accused Dev Sunar and the gym trainer Sumit.
On digging deeper, the police then learnt about the relationship shared between Sumit and the victim’s wife Nidhi, and this is when the suspect bells rang aloud.
Both Sumit and Nidhi were picked up for questioning, and then shocking details of this gruesome murder were revealed.

Interrogation of Wife, Her Lover
During this questioning, the police learnt that the planning of murder was not instant, but had been happening since a long time. Infact, before the actual murder, there had been a failed attempt to kill Vinod, earlier in the same as well.
Sumit revealed to police:
We had approached Dev Sunar, a truck driver from Punjab, for the hit job. The truck driver was offered Rs 10 lakh in cash. He agreed.
Then, a pick-up van was arranged and Sunar rammed this vehicle into Vinod’s car on October 5, 2021. Vinod suffered serious injuries with both legs broken, but he somehow survived.
Adding further, Sumit shared that after this failed attempt, Nidhi and he were left frustrated and thus they started devising a new plan to kill Vinod.
They now sent Sunar to Vinod’s home asking him to settle the accident case. When Vinod refused to do so, Sunar shot him dead.

Police Investigation
While the police was revisiting the sequence of events, they also learnt that Nidhi had sent off her daughter to Australia to stay with their relatives, and subsequently, she and Sumit had gone on a trip to Manali, within few days of Vinod’s murder.
Secondly, the police had also traced transactions, how Nidhi had been funding legal and household expenses of murder accused Sunar, from the insurance payout she received after her husband’s death. Not just this, but in March 2024, Nidhi had also withdrawn her statement as the prime witness in Vinod’s murder, which would have surely weakened the case.
District Police Chief Shekhawat expressed:
When I studied the case, I wondered why anyone would kill another man just because he had refused to settle an accident case.
A case of rash driving does not attract a heavy penalty and accused often get bail, but the punishment for murder is far more severe.
After cross questioning, both Nidhi and Sumit finally admitted to their crime.
Sumit was arrested on June 07, 2024 and sent to seven days remand. Later, Nidhi was also taken into custody and the duo were then produced in court and sent to jail.

- After findings of this case went public, we are seeing many social media warriors abusing gym trainers in general
- Are gym trainers really the root problem or the intent of a married woman who chooses to involve herself in a relationship outside marriage far more grave?
- Firstly, we should stop bashing anyone’s profession in general and understand why women are opting for husband’s murder instead of legally filing for divorce
- Prior to 2018, adultery was a criminal offence, this means a husband could have got his wife’s paramour arrested on charges on extra marital affair with his spouse
- Thus, earlier there was some kind of fear instilled within a married woman and her lover, and threat of a police case restricted them from becoming completely defiant against the husband
- After the Decriminalisation of Section 497 IPC (adultery law), there was no such threat and several women indulging in adultery started openly mocking the limitations of their husbands, if they dared to question them
- Any kind of confrontation by the husband is either retorted by the adulterous wife, with a false dowry or domestic violence case against him, or in cases like these, the wives even go to the extent of getting the root cause – the husband – out of the picture forever
- Many of you may question, why didn’t the wife opt for divorce, if she wanted to live with someone else?
- Husbands, on the other hand, have been reduced to puppets and the only recourse for them is civil grounds for divorce – once again which may take years to prove wife’s adultery and in the end the divorce may be concluded with permanent alimony to the adulterous wife
- This case is not about a husband’s murder that never happened before, or won’t happen even in the future
- This case is about taking the weak legal system and its loopholes for granted, in the hope that a wife could literally get away with murder…
