Crime Has No Gender. When we speak about Domestic Violence, women murdering husbands is also an extreme form of the said crime. However, as society, we are always prompt to visualise DV, as Man beating Woman.
Let us explore one such case from Mumbai that took place in the year 2017.
Case:
Former hockey player Ayyappa Chenanda was found murdered at his residence at the Agarwal Trinity Towers in Malad on August 20, 2017.
Amita, an executive at a private firm, was Ayyappa’s second wife. The two married 16-years ago and have a 17-year-old daughter, said police. Ayyappa has a 23-year-old son, Ganpati, from his first wife. Ayyappa’s family lives in the United States.
Amita allegedly stabbed Ayyappa seven times with a kitchen knife and the victim was found with stab wounds on his chest and stomach. The bloodied knife was found on him.
Amita told police that Ayyappa suffered from epilepsy. Police recorded the statements of both children to determine if there was a history of violence in the family. One of the children told police that the couple would fight regularly, but never resort to physical violence. The child said that spats between the couple were usually resolved quickly and such an outcome was unimaginable.
Police also recorded the statements of the couple’s neighbours. One of them told police that Amita called them using the house’s intercom. When they arrived, they saw Ayyappa lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom.
Police said they also seized a two-minute-long video taken by one of the neighbours. It shows Amita being taken to the hospital, while talking about how the property will be divided between the children.
Police Statement
Investigations revealed that Amita and Ayyappa had been quarrelling since a long time over property matters. Husband also suspected that his wife was having an extra-marital affair. According to police, woman’s friends would often come home and also help her financially. When the husband objected to his wife taking money from outsiders, the couple would end up fighting.
Motive
Malad apartment was in the name of Ayyappa. Amita feared that he would give it to his son from first wife, and thus kept pressurising him to transfer the same in her name. But the husband refused to do so.

According to the police, Amita had pre-planned the murder and also kept the weapon ready. On the day of the murder, she made him a drink, and purposely started fighting over property matters. As Ayyappa started shouting at her, she stabbed him thrice and pushed him down.
Cover Up
Amita also stabbed herself and placed the knife in her dead husband’s hands before anyone could arrive. She then started screaming for help. The neighbours soon arrived and rushed her to the hospital.
Police Investigation
When police started questioning her, they realised that she had cooked up the story and her wounds were in fact self-inflicted. Ayyappa’s son also gave a complaint against Amita accusing her of murdering his father.
The accused woman was also sent for a psychiatric evaluation at the Nair hospital, which termed her mentally fit.
Ayyappa’s body was found with seven stab wounds in his bedroom. The couple were alone in the flat at the time of the murder.
Amita was later arrested by Mumbai police.
