Welcome to Women Empowerment 10.0 version 2020!
DSP Mutual Fund India has launched an ‘Alimony Calculator’, which asserts to ‘guide’ estranged wife to understand her current and future expenses and, therefore, the corpus needed to meet expenses that will not alter her current lifestyle. The calculator comes with a disclaimer:
Based on the inputs, it is advised to consult a legal advisor before taking any decisions.
The calculator gives an idea about the alimony amount required by calculating expenses related to household, utilities, medical, insurance, entertainment, holiday, child support among others. It then asks the educated fully-abled woman to calculate her empowerment – that is her income, inheritance, paternal support and current bank balance to ascertain the corpus required.
According to fund managers, even if an estranged wife is earning lower than her ex partner’s income, she will still be granted alimony. Also in the case where she is not earning, the court considers her age, education, ability to earn to decide the amount of the alimony.

Aditi Kothari Desai, director (sales), DSP Investment Managers said,
A general lack of knowledge, coupled with emotions taking precedence over logical thinking, often lead to a skewed division of marital assets.
Our alimony calculator aims to arm women with the necessary math needed to ascertain the corpus needed for her to continue her lifestyle while still being very fair to the other party.
DSP has also perhaps tied up with Feminist and Empowered Twinkle Khanna’s portal Tweak India which has published the below blog explaining what is Alimony and how DSP is ‘enabling women financially and guiding them through an already difficult process’. The article insists,
The Alimony Calculator is created with the vision of helping women feel empowered by having a tool that can lead to financial independence, and in some way take away from the emotional stress of a divorce.

Father Pleads To PM Modi As His Daughter-In-Law’s Family Demands Rs 1.5Cr Alimony Or Face Fake Charges
For starters, if a woman is able to use the calculator all by herself, she is surely abled to go and search for a job that can provide her with a livelihood to feel empowered in the real sense. Secondly, ‘Alimony Calculator’ sounds like a legally approved extortion gadget against husbands, where wives are the only ones who can project themselves as ‘victims’ and unilaterally decide what they deserve. We thought India still has a judicial system which analyses case by case and accounts for fair justice.
The launch of such a calculator is nothing but a tight slap in the name of Feminism and benefits of Entitlement that DSP is presumably projecting. Alimony is not a birth right for any woman, but a provision allotted by our judiciary to ensure a woman lives with equal dignity and respect that she would have enjoyed in her matrimonial home. This, however as a concept, is extremely flawed in the year 2020, since alimony/maintenance has no specific timeline or a cap on the number of years, thereby, making several women lazy and unemployed.
Child maintenance is a separate issue and cannot be clubbed with wife’s maintenance.

Husband Ends Life Alleging False Cases By Wife & In-Laws Threatening Him To Pay Rs 10 Lakh Alimony
Often, separated and divorced women, especially in short-lived marriages, misuse women-centric laws to declare themselves incapable for work. On the other hand, they choose to sit idle and post victimisation stories daily on social media.
Unfortunately the link to the calculator has been disabled for reasons best known to DSP. However, the product manager who chose to ride on the wave of fake feminism in the International Women’s Day Week, clearly has zero understanding of how alimony ‘rewards’ work legally in India.

This Alimony Calculator will help you break even amicably
This one-of-a-kind tool will help you become financially independent post your divorce
“I see my father and mother today, and they are much happier than they would be together, and therefore everyone around them is happier. What I have now is two comfortable homes as opposed to one uncomfortable home,” said Sara Ali Khan as she spoke about he parents’ separation on Koffee with Karan.
Divorce and separation are spoken about in hushed tones, a stark contrast to the dhoom dhaam of the wedding that went before it.
Nobody likes to see their fairytale ending unravel at the seams, but if things end amicably, it could very well be the best decision you’ve made, for all humans (and pets) involved.
This becomes especially important when you consider that the incidences of divorce have grown by almost thirteen fold in the last decade.
The one point of contention (apart from who gets to keep the dog) is alimony and finances.
And contrary to popular belief, in the aftermath of a divorce, women end up being more susceptible to financial hardships as compared to their male counterparts.
A study conducted by Stephen Jenkins, professor of economic and social policy at the London School of Economics, states that the poverty rate for separated women is 27 percent, which is almost triple the figure for separated men.

The only way around such a situation is educating yourself and being equipped with tools that will help make the process easier.
“When discussing alimony, it’s understandable to argue about expenses, but you shouldn’t have to argue about the math,” says Aditi Kothari Desai, director and head of sales and marketing, DSP Investment Managers.
Her company recently launched the Alimony Calculator in an attempt to empower women financially and guide them through the already difficult process.
What is the Alimony Calculator?
“More often than not, people don’t take very practical elements into account such as inflation, which directly affects their financial well-being. This is the gap we are looking to bridge with our Alimony Calculator,” she adds.
The calculator can be accessed via the DSP website. The amount is calculated after taking into account the woman’s finances, ranging from inheritance, income, medical expenses and insurance to something as small as groceries and gifting expenses.
The final calculated number ensures that a woman doesn’t find herself making major lifestyle compromises that she didn’t anticipate.
“Our alimony calculator aims to arm women with the necessary math to ascertain the corpus needed for her to continue her lifestyle. It’s still being very fair to the other party because she’s asked to disclose her income, and parental support,” explains Desai.
The Alimony Calculator is created with the vision of helping women feel empowered by having a tool that can lead to financial independence, and in some way take away from the emotional stress of a divorce.
