Delhi Man Sues Marriage Bureau Since They Failed To Find Him The Perfect Match

How many of you have actually applied to a marriage bureau and have been left without meeting even a single potential spouse? Well, that could be quite common since our expectations too are sky high as we think by making payment to an external agency, we have hired them to find us a super man or a super woman.

In one such case below from Delhi, a man was forced to sue the marriage bureau for unfair trade practice and deficiency in service as it failed to find a perfect match for him or even arrange any meeting with any prospective match.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum found the marriage bureau grossly deficient in service and directed it to refund Rs 31,000 paid by the complainant for premium matrimonial services and compensate him for mental agony by paying another Rs 5,000.

Case:

• The complainant told the forum that it had approached the South Delhi- based marriage bureau in the year 2016
• As per the original acknowledgment letter placed on record, the agency had committed to provide profile sharing, customised services and was also supposed to arrange a meeting in lounge with the potential bride
• The agency also promised to provide astrology matchmaking for shortlisted profiles
• He said despite collecting Rs 31,000 for premium matrimonial services, the bureau was not only unable to find a perfect match but also failed to arrange even a single meeting for him with any probable match
• The bureau also fell behind its claim of providing customised service and stopped answering the complainant’s phone calls
• Since they failed to fulfil any of the promised services to the complainant despite receiving the consideration amount of Rs 31,000, the court decided to levy a fine on them

The matter was being heard at the District Consumer Disputes Redressal, New Delhi. The bench of Rekha Rani and Kiran Kaushal ordered,

We are of the opinion that the agency is grossly deficient in service. We allow the complaint and direct the accused to refund Rs 31,000 paid by the complainant along with interest @6% per annum from the date of registration till realisation.

Additionally, the marriage bureau is directed to pay Rs 5,000 towards mental agony, harassment and cost of litigation.

The bureau was proceeded ex-parte.
