A daughter-in-law of a retired judge in Gujarat has filed a complaint of dowry and physical and mental harassment against against her husband and in-laws at the family court.
According to the complaint, the daughter-in-law alleged of torture after she gave birth to a girl as her in-laws wanted a boy child. She has also accused her father-in-law of demanding a silver biscuit as dowry. The matter pertains to Vasana town in Ahmedabad.
Case:
Gyaneshwari, 26, originally from Surendranagar married Suresh from Bhavnagar in 2017. Husband is the son of Himanshubhai Jagannath Joshi, who was then serving as a judge in the City Civil Court. Soon after marriage, Gyaneshwari started living with her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law Jyotiben at their Ellisbridge Satyam flat.
Suresh was unemployed and later Himanshubhai got transferred to Vadodara. While the in-laws moved to a different home, Gyaneshwari and Suresh too went on to live in another property named Silver Garden.
When Himanshubhai was transferred to Gandhinagar in February 2018, Gyaneshwari and Suresh once again shifted with them at their home.
Daughter-in-Law’s Allegations
According to Gyaneshwari, mother-in-law was tormenting her physically and mentally by asking her to do all the housework. She also alleged of being given less food to eat. When Gyaneshwari gave birth to a girl on March 1, 2019, her in-laws were allegedly annoyed.
The woman spoke to her parents, however, according to her complaint, they asked her to remain mum, else her life would be ruined. She then accused her father-in-law of demanding silver biscuit as dowry.
According to the woman, the harassment continued for few months after the birth of her child. Gyaneshwari has now filed a complaint with the Vasana police station.
PI AL Mehta confirmed the matter and said that Himanshubhai Joshi is currently retired. However, based on Gyaneshwari’s complaint, the investigation is on. No arrests have been made so far.
