Indore Cyber Cell Arrests Woman For Hacking Husband’s Income Tax Password

Last month, the State Cyber Cell arrested a woman in Indore, Madhya Pradesh for allegedly resetting the password of income tax ID of her divorced husband. In a unique order by MP High Court, the woman was ordered to give Rs 10,000 every month as maintenance to her husband and she allegedly hacked his IT account to know his true income.

SP (cyber cell) Jitendra Singh said that a woman named Tripti Agrawal, a resident of Jawahar, had reset the password with the help of her cousin sister, who is a chartered accountant in the city.

Background

Woman’s husband Anoop Agrawal  is a resident of Shubh Sampada Colony. In July 2018, the husband had lodged a complaint with the cyber cell alleging that someone had hacked his income tax account and also
changed the password.

On receiving the complaint, cyber cell officials had lodged a case under sections:

• 419
• 420 of the IPC

and

• 43-A
• 66-D
• 84-C of IT Act

A team comprising inspector Ambarish Mishra, head constable Ramprakash Bajpayee, constable Ramesh Bhide, Subedar Divya Jain and lady constable Vinita Tripathi was constituted to investigate the case further. The team took information from the Income Tax Department about the ID and information from Google was also taken to learn about the email id that was used in resetting the password.

Later, investigation revealed that the accused was none other but the man’s wife Tripti who works as a Trade Finance Manager with ICICI Bank. She had collaborated with her cousin who is a chartered accountant to hack her husband’s account.

Motive

SP Singh said that the court had ordered the woman to give Rs 10,000 to her ex-husband as maintenance every month. The woman had doubts about the real income of her divorced husband, and thus she reset the password to learn more, without any court order. A mobile phone and SIM card used in resetting password were also recovered from the woman.

Wife had filed dowry harassment charges on Anoop due to which he was lodged in jail and lost employment. After being released on bail, he filed a maintenance case on his wife who was gainfully employed and earning nearly Rs 60,000 a month.

In a rare case, the court ordered payment of maintenance in husband’s favour and asked the manager wife to transfer Rs 10,000 every month to the man.

• Men’s Day Out strongly believes maintenance to either fully-abled spouses must be discouraged
• Duration in marriage, children, ability to earn in future must be taken into consideration while awarding maintenance to any spouse
• Maintenance cannot be lifelong to anyone and there must be a concrete process to make divorced/separated dependent spouses financially independent
