In life, we all have a choice. Achieve our goals or cry victimhood! This inspirational story of a bus conductor from Bengaluru has once again proven, sky is he limit if you want to really win over the circumstances thrown at you.

Madhu NC, who hails from a small town of Malavali in Mandya, joined as a bus conductor with BMTC ten years ago at the age of 19. Recently, Madhu cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Mains exam which results were released this month.

His Story

  • Proudly donning a khaki uniform, 29-year-old Madhu hands tickets to travellers in a Bengaluru bus for eight hours
  • Amidst his daily work schedule, the young lad cleared the UPSC mains exam by studying five hours a day after returning from his job
  • Unlike others, he is not resting, but preparing for the final stage of the coveted civil service examination
  • After clearing the Union Public Service Commission Mains, Madhu is now preparing for the interview slated for March 25
  • The UPSC aspirant had to study Political Science & International Relations, Ethics, Language, General Studies (divided into three parts), Math and Essay Writing
  • Though his parents don’t know which exam he has cleared, they are elated with his result
  • He is the first member in their family to study and complete his Masters in Political Science
  • This, despite not take any coaching for the exams, except for guidance from C Shikha, IAS officer and the Managing Director of Bangalore Metropolitan Corporation

Madhu quoted to the Bangalore Mirror,

I always wanted to achieve something big in life. I started working early to support my family but that did not stop me from studying further. I used to study for five hours a day. I would wake up at 4 am and finish my studies before proceeding to work.

After having failed in the Karnataka Administrative Services (KAS) exams in 2014, Madhu says he was not demotivated, rather it inspired him to do better. In 2018, he gave the UPSC exam but did not clear it. However, that did not stop him from appearing for the exam again and he finally cleared it this time. Madhu asserted,

I always wanted to achieve something big in life.

Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka Dr CN Ashwathnarayan C. N. tweeted with best wishes for the 29-year-old. He quoted:

‘Greatness requires internal toughness’.

It is a matter of great delight to see a living testimony of this quote.

My best wishes to Madhu NC for his UPSC journey! Keep inspiring!

Rather than opting for the conventional way of joining a coaching class, Madhu prepared for the exam through self-study with some guidance from his seniors at the BMTC head office. He said,

I watch a lot of YouTube videos to learn how to prepare for the interview. I am learning the art of answering questions with confidence. I am very positive and confident that I will clear the interview too.

We truly admire such individuals, who are determined to strive hard for their goals. No cribbing, no playing victim card……..pure hard work followed by result! Wishing Madhu great luck…!
