Does your blood boil when you hear of Dowry practices still being prevalent in our country? If yes, then why don’t we as a society, equally outrage, when women are making a mockery of the dowry law, misusing it to their advantage, while innocent husband and his family are jailed on mere complaint?
Here’s a shocker from Bihar!
A woman who was declared dead in Motihari district of Bihar was found living with her lover in Jalandhar. What is even more shocking is that her husband was serving punishment in jail for her alleged ‘murder’.
Shanti Devi, who is very much alive, married Dinesh Ram, a resident of Laxmipur, on June 14, 2016. After some years into the marriage, Shanti allegedly ran away from her husband’s home in April this year and started living with her lover in Punjab.
Immediately after the woman went missing, her family members approached the police and accused the husband of dowry harassment. They also alleged that he had murdered their daughter.
The police acted promptly on the complaint from the alleged victim’s kin, and arrested Dinesh. The husband was sent to jail on charges of wife’s murder.
Dowry Harassment Charges Against Daughter’s In-Laws
In India, if a married woman dies under any circumstances, it is easiest for her family to cry dowry harassment without an iota of proof. Most often, these charges are pressed upon the husband and his family to ‘ensure that they suffer too’.
When Shanti disappeared, her father, Yogendra Yadav, had told police,
My daughter married Dinesh Ram in 2016 but on April 19, I received information that she was nowhere to be found. I went to her in-laws’ house and checked but in vain. Last year, my daughter was tortured for dowry as her in-laws had demanded a motorbike and Rs 50,000 cash.
Wife’s father then filed an FIR against Husband, following which he was arrested.
Woman Alive, Living With Lover
The Station House Officer smelled a rat and urged the technical team to trace the mobile phone location of Shanti. With the help of technical surveillance, police found that the woman, who was declared dead, was actually living with her lover in Jalandhar district of Punjab.
A police team was constituted after the matter came to light and the woman was brought back to Motihari.
- What does this case say about the police investigation in dowry and murder cases?
- The husband was arrested on mere complaint by father-in-law, without any basic enquiry of dowry harassment charges or murder of wife
- Sadly, no government currently, is taking a strong stand against this rampant misuse of laws by women and their families
- Even after charges are proven to be false, and men serve several months and years in jail, women go scot free without any consequences whatsoever
