Dowry is a crime and illegal in India. Several stringent laws have been made to ensure dowry is neither demanded by in-laws of the bride, nor given by the parents of the girl. However, a case has been reported from Madhya Pradesh, where the bride refused to go to her in-laws’ residence, since they did not accept dowry items after marriage.
Here’s What Happened
The case is said to be from Arera colony, a posh locality in Bhopal where a couple got married on February 14, 2021.
At the wedding, the girl’s side presented a car and several valuables to the groom, however, the man and his parents refused to accept the same. It was the bride instead, who insisted that her husband and in-laws accept the dowry items and bring it home along with them. The bride refused to join husband and her in-laws in her matrimonial home until they accepted the same.
The girl and her family, also added,
He (girl’s father) is giving gifts happily to his son-in-law, this is not dowry. They have only one daughter and they had armaan (wish) to give all kinds of presents for the wedding.
The girl’s family categorically said that there was no demand from the son-in-law. Now both the husband and wife are being guided by the counsellor.
The husband has also approached the court to bring his angry wife home. He has filed a case under Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act as well. The husband argued,
There is no place to store these gifts at our home, I tried hard to convince my wife too, but she is not ready to accept it.
Counsellor At Family Court
The counsellor at family court is asking the husband to understand how these gifts are not considered as dowry and are given by the choice and willingness of girl’s parents. The counsellor also told husband that all these items belonged to his wife and that he should not deprive her of the same.
While today everyone in society is ready to bash men and their families without understanding the meaning of Dowry, please leave your comments on this story below.
