Come June 11, and India will be taking its first step to ‘Smashing The Patriarchy’. A self empowered woman from Gujarat is all set to tie the knot….with herself! Yes, you heard that right!
You Go Girl
24-year-old Kshama Bindu from Vadodara will be marrying herself next month. She has planned all ceremonies — right from the ‘pheras‘ and wedding vows to a Goa honeymoon……but course there won’t be a baraat though 🙁 Sigh!
Speaking to TOI, Kshama – who has gained one day fame for undertaking India’s first solo wedding or sologamy – said,
I looked up to see if there has been any such marriage in India, but couldn’t find any. Maybe I am the first one to do so. I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So I decided to marry myself.
Kshama, who works for a private firm, added,
Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. It’s also an act of self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. I love myself and hence, this wedding.
Kshama justified this step to marry herself since she wanted to highlight the fact that “women matter”. She said:
Some might perceive self-marriage as irrelevant. But what I am actually trying to portray is that women matter.
How Has Her Family Reacted?
Kshama said her parents have blessed her to go ahead with the wedding. She has prepared five vows for the wedding that will be held at a temple in Gotri.
And there is Honeymoon too!
After the wedding, Kshama has decided to take herself on a two-week honeymoon to Goa.
VFMI Take:
- Since women find every single thing problematic with men, this will be an ideal situation, where women can live and let live
- No more tantrums of alleged patriarchy, dowry, domestic chores at home, forced to have children, maintenance, alimony, besides others
