Delhi voted in the Assembly elections today and controversies are a part of every election. Congress leader Alka Lamba too found herself in the news and social media all day, as she attempted to slap an AAP worker after they engaged in a skirmish.
The incident occurred outside a polling booth near Majnu ka Tila wherein the Congress leader sparred with AAP workers, which was intervened by Delhi Police. After she tried to slap an AAP worker outside a polling booth, Congress leader Alka Lamba on Saturday alleged that he abused her first. She quoted,
Election Commission allows every candidate to visit polling booths and meet poll officials. When I came out of the polling booth, the AAP candidate’s son was arguing with the police to allow him inside the booth. AAP worker Harmish abused me. I know him for the past many years. Later, Delhi Police took him to the police station.

Lamba was talking to a person outside a polling booth when the AAP worker passed personal remarks against her 22-year-old son and thus Lamba reacted physically. The choice of words used by the AAP member are definitely condemnable, and no one must be allowed to use slang or abusive language towards either female or male politicians, or eitherways in general.
Alka in this case should have proceeded legally against the man, instead of taking law in her own hands. In a reverse situation, we would have never pardoned a male politician acting in this manner towards any abusive woman.

Due to this controversy, an old TOI article about Lamba’s personal brawl with her former husband Lokesh Kapoor, has gone viral. According to the report in 2003, Kapoor had alleged that Lamba had illegally occupied his home in Subhash Nagar (Delhi), when the then Congress candidate was going to contest from Moti Nagar in the capital.
The estranged husband also alleged that Lamba had been using the home as her political office for past three years. The couple resided together in the flat for a year, post which the wife had allegedly asked him to leave.
Kapoor had also mentioned that his wife had harassed him and his parents because she thought they came in her way of her political ambitions. He then quoted,
I would have kept quiet about it had it not been for the fact that she is projecting herself as an honest person. My son Himalaya is with her parents. His custody should be given to me.
The husband had also written to several women organisations especially Indian Housewives Federation to boycott Lamba.
Who Is Alka Lamba?
Alka started her political career in 1994 when she was a second year BSc student in Delhi University. After joining National Students Union of India (NSUI), Alka handled many responsibilities including the role of Delhi State Girl Convener. Gradually she became the President of all India NSUI.
Alka was appointed as the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress in 2002 but within a year she faced defeat during the Delhi Assembly Election in 2003. However, more feathers were added to her crown when she continued her political career. Finally, she was appointed as Vice Chairperson of NIPCCD, an autonomous body of Ministry of Women and Child Development.
However, in 2012, Alka had been accused of revealing the name of the victim in a Guwhati molestation case during a packed press conference. Quick to react, the then NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma had removed Lamba from the team, since she was one of the members of the fact-finding team. It was wrong on her part to publicise the name of the victim.
Lamba had later joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and won the Assembly seat of Chandni Chowk in 2015. But with her ongoing problems within the party, she once again joined the Congress in October 2019. Days after she announced she will quit AAP, she was disqualified as a member of the Delhi Assembly by Speaker Ram Niwas Goel under the anti-defection law.
This is not the first time Lamba has been caught taking law in her own hands. In 2015, a shopkeeper in Delhi had shared a CCTV footage where Lamba had entered his shop and vandalised the same.
