Ali Zafar’s #MeToo Accuser Apologises | Asks All To Do Research Before Naming Men As There Can Be ‘Agendas’

Singer turned actor Ali Zafar had been accused of harassment by several women last year, after singer Meesha Shafi levelled harassment charges against him. A lot of people did not believe her until a few other women also joined in and claimed that they had had similar experiences or had witnessed them.

One of the women who then tweeted was Sofi, a Twitter user, claiming to be based in the United States. However, recently Sofi withdrew her statement against Zafar and also apologised to him.

In her original tweet in April 2018, Sofi claimed that she was working as an organizer for a fund raiser and had sent a girl to receive Zafar, but he allegedly tried to misbehave with her.

• Although, Sofi soon disappeared from Twitter and a lot of people suspected it to be a fake account since no one really knew her
• The additional information about the location and date of the incident that she provided fell apart since people brought contrary evidence of Ali Zafar’s whereabouts for the day she was talking about

Almost after one and a half years now, Sofi has apologised to the Pakistani singer, saying she made a ‘hasty decision to share the false information on social media’. She said she made the allegations against the singer based on false information provided to her. Sofi wrote,

Last year, I tweeted when a young lady confided her harassment experience with Ali Zafar; I deleted it in a day when certain information was brought to my knowledge which contradicted her description of the incident to me.

I am a victim of harassment & a MeToo supporter & inclined to believe a woman’s account but sometimes our faith in people is misplaced. I regret the pain my naïveté & lack of impartial judgement has caused Mr Zafar & I hope this can make amends!

I am sorry that a lie I was told & believed hastily( bcos liar ws very young) though deleted is still being used to bash you & cause you pain. I shud have clarified much sooner but I was afraid of the trolls & online stalking & abuse. I hope this can atone for it.

Ali Zafar, too, responded on Twitter appreciating Sofi for having the courage to accept her mistake and apologise. He quoted:

Sofi did not stop here. Responding to several replies on her current apology, she clarified that she still remained a supporter of #MeToo Campaign, however, requested all to stay alert before naming and shaming anyone without having knowledge of accurate facts. She also hinted to be wary of ‘agendas‘.

And for all the #MeToo supporters, we still need to support #MeToo & harassment victims but please don’t commit the mistake I made & do some research of the account told to you. Sometimes there r agendas at play which we only realise much much later!

And what kind of “ fake” feminist wud bash another woman when she is saying she believed an account which isn’t true after being checked & the original victim wouldn’t come forward. Should we blv in lies to support an ideological agenda?

The above apology re-emphasises how #MeToo was a fad where most women openly blamed men — in some cases where they never even met the alleged accused in person. One needs to be careful before misusing the gender card, as it can tarnish a man’s personal life and career for good.
