A couple has been booked on charges of abetment to suicide of a 22-year-old engineering student — who had killed himself in June this year.
The boy had left a suicide message for his father, before ending his life, pleading that he was not a rapist.
Case:
Sangam Prajapati (22) was a resident of Bhopal’s Ashoka Garden at Tulsi Nagar in Hinotia. His father MK Prajapati works for Central Police Force in Jharkhand. The engineering graduate had ended his life by hanging himself on June 13, 2022. However, after more than four months, the police has registered a case of abetment to suicide against one couple on October 18. This couple happens to be ex-tenants of Prajapati family.

Background:
As per a detailed report by Dainik Bhaskar, the tenant couple who was living here since 3-years maintained a good relationship with Sangam’s family. The tenant (husband) works as librarian in a private engineering college in Bhopal, while his wife is a homemaker. The husband, however, would be away from his home for many days.
One week before Sangam’s suicide, the tenant called up MK Prajapati informing him that his wife was unwell. Since he was not at home, he requested if Sangam could take his wife to the hospital. However, initially Sangam refused to do so. When his father requested him, Sangam agreed to take the woman, but said he would leave her there and return home at once.
After reaching the private nursing home, the doctors admitted the woman as she was suspected to have asthma. Sangam informed about this to his father, however, when MK tried contacting the woman’s husband, his phone was switched off. Despite several failed attempts to contact the tenant, MK then called his wife and asked her to visit the nursing home.
The father also asked Sangam to stay in the hospital for sometime. Eventhough Sangam refused, his father requested him to be there for the sake of humanity, till her husband could be contacted.
Shockingly, four days passed by, but the woman’s husband was not contactable. On the fifth day, he returned to Bhopal and got his wife discharged.
Suddenly, the same day at 3am, both the husband and wife gathered their belongings and left the place without informing anyone. When Sangam’s mother came to know about this in the morning, she informed her husband over the phone.

Blackmail Begins
Since the couple’s departure, Sangam was getting constant calls, which affected his mental health. One one occasion, he was seen speaking to the ceiling alone in a loud tone. When his elder brother Paras questioned him, Sangam opened up that he was being harassed and blackmailed by the tenant’s wife. Paras asked him for details, however, Sangam said he would share later and also asked brother not to inform parents at that point in time.
Suicide
On June 13, Sangam’s body was found hanging from a noose on the lower floor of the house. He left a suicide message for his father, which read:
I may be worthless… but I cannot be a rapist. I have never forced her, nor did I ever provoke her. I am being framed. I admit it was my fault too that I didn’t refuse. Even if I refused, bhabhi (tenant’s wife) used to talk about dying by suicide … so how could I refuse.

Police Investigation
Police has sent Sangam’s mobile phone for forensic examination. Now, after 4 months, the police has booked the tenant couple for abetment to suicide, post receiving inputs from Sangam’s family members.
The police confirmed that the couple was blackmailing Sangam, due to which he took the extreme step. A case was registered based on the call records of the deceased’s mobile phone and the statements of his father and brother.
Investigation officer SI SL Markam also said that just before taking the extreme step, the deceased had spoken to the tenant’s wife for more than 47-minutes.
Last Call
According to police, Sangam had a long conversation with Bhabhi before ending his life on June 13. Before ending his life, he messaged his father that he was not a rapist.
Sangam also shared with his friend, that the tenant husband was blackmailing him constantly.
Father’s Statement
According to MK Prajapati, he had given notice to the tenant in May this year to vacate their property.
He also said that when he was back home, he once saw his son was on the terrace and the tenant woman went and sat near him. Deceased’s father said,
I told this to my wife that the behavior of this woman didn’t seem right and thus we asked her to vacate the house. When Sangam’s mother asked them to vacate the house, the tenant husband replied they were off for a wedding and would vacate the same after returning.
Brother’s Statement
Paras also shared how the tenant woman would go to the terrace on some pretext whenever his brother would be sitting there.
Tenant’s Statement
When the tenant couple was quizzed, the husband informed police that Sangam used to molest his wife. The woman in fact accused Sangam of molesting her whenever she visited the terrace.
The police are awaiting forensic report of Sangam’s mobile, until then there is no arrest.
