In a shocking story from Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister’s mass marriage scheme known as UP Samuhik Vivah Yojana, is proving meaningless. As per a recent report, 60% brides do not reach their matrimonial homes after marriage and are returning to their parental homes instead. Here’s the reason!
About the Scheme
Applications are invited from eligible couples through district panchayat and Nagar Nigam whichever is applicable, to the district social welfare department. While the eligible bride must be of 18-years and the groom 21-years, their parents should belong to the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Necessary certificates need to be submitted including those of age, caste or if the couple marries under scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, differently-abled or others categories.
The applicant’s annual income should not exceed Rs 2 lakh, while the bride should have her own bank account. Priority will be given to the daughter of a widow or differently-abled, remarriage of a widow or divorced.
A sum of Rs 51,000 will be spent per couple in which Rs 35,000 will be credited straight into the bride’s account as financial help. Rs 10,000 per couple will be spent on wedding-related gifts and expenditures such as utensils, clothes etc while Rs 6,000 per couple will be spent on food and decoration etc.
Couples Misusing Scheme For Financial Gains
Several couples who are availing benefit of this scheme, have been caught doing it only for money. Most women are not even stepping into their husband’s homes after the ceremony and already married couples are getting married to other partners within 2 weeks or a month, after getting money from their government sponsored wedding.
Recently on December 11, nearly 263 couples got married by the administration in the district of Mahoba. Shockingly, more than 80% of them merely put jaymaala (garland), did not even complete the ceremony and then left with cash and articles received from the state government.
Brother & Sister Married Each Other
A shameful case has come to light from Firozabad. Recently, under the same government scheme option at Tundla, a brother and sister got married to each other. After the authorities learnt about the same, a complaint has been lodged against the accused youth. At the same time, clarification has been sought from the verifying secretaries and ADOs.
When the videos and photographs of some couples reached local people in the area and village head, four cases of fraud came to light during the ceremony. In one of these cases, villagers recognised the couple related to each other as siblings. After investigation in the said case, Chandrabhan Singh, Assistant Development Officer of the Social Welfare Department has given a complaint against the man (brother).
Rajesh Kumar Pandey, in-charge of Tundla Kotwali, said that a complaint has been lodged by the Assistant Development Officer of the Social Welfare Department in the case and matter is being investigated. After investigation, action will be taken against the accused.
