Unhappy marriages can be fatal and result in death of Men upto 19%, as per some eye opening details put out by WION News.
That’s what a study conducted by Israel says – where a sample size of 9,000 Men were asked to rate their quotient of satisfaction in marriage. These Men were around 40-years or above and most of them were civil servants or municipal employees. They were asked to record their marriage on a scale of 1-4 degree stating whether it was a happy marriage or an unhappy marriage – 1 being very successful and happy marriage, while 4 being unsuccessful marriage.
The study lasted for 32-years and 64% of participants died by the end of it. About 6.7% Men died from a stroke. According to the researchers, for men who were least happy in their marriage, rate of stroke increased by 69.2%. Rate of death other than stroke also increased by 19%.
In 2014, another study concluded that any marriage can affect physical health as much as diet or physical activity. You can eat right, exercise right, but you will not be healthy if your marriage is not a happy one. Marital disruption is a major stress that differentiates those who will become ill, from those who will not.
Unhappy marriages are a reality. There is no data on how many couples are under stress. Marriage is a very personal issue and most do not talk about it.
A 2012 book on unhappy marriages suggested that only 17% couples were content with their partners. Another author quoted that 6 out 10 couples are unhappy, while 4 out of 10 consider leaving their partner.
How Many Marriages Result in Divorce?
According to data published in 2019, rate of divorce in India is only 1%. Children of course, become primary reason for unhappy couples to stick around. However, according to science, marital distress and conflict is associated with depression in such children. These young minds suffer poor social competence, health problems and poor academic performance. Financial, social and other personal reasons also lead to unhappy couples not leaving their spouses.
Why Do Marriages Fall Apart?
Communication and lack of compatibility are one of the top factors for divorce. Technology has added as a catalyst for breakups, since couples are spending most time on mobiles, instead with their partners. Women too suffer bad marriages equally.
Should Indian parents force marriage on their children? Lets not judge couples who opt for marriage counselling.

- India is a land of unhappy marriages, particularly because we do not allow easy exit, even from some of the worst relationships
- While Women in bad marriages have several laws in their favour, it is almost impossible for Men in abusive marriages to get through a contested divorce
- Even if Men are successful, they have to shell out huge alimony despite suffering themselves, or fight a never ending court battle for minimum 15-20 years
- India in 2021 still does not recognise ‘irretrievable breakdown in marriage’ as a ground for divorce, leaving them to either suffer in silence or very often end their lives
- Couples in bad marriages should not make it an ego issue trying to ‘fix the other’ if things do not work out for them
- Children who see their parents fighting daily have a sad upbringing, than children who are brought up under the care of #SharedParenting
- Lets stop looking at marriage as some final destination – instead look at it as an enjoyable journey which could have dead ends at times
- Its time India stops forcing couples to ‘Live With’…….’Till Death Does Us Apart’…
