Divorcee Woman’s Family Lures Underage Boy’s Father For Marriage On Assurance Of Swanky Car

Dowry is a crime in India – Both the givers and takers should be equally responsible and parents of both the bride and the groom who indulge in such practices must be booked together. In an incident reported from Tamil Nadu, the family of a divorcee woman has lured the father of a teenage boy for marriage, by promising him expensive gift.

The bride whose proposal had been floated to the boy’s family, is a 25-year old divorcee woman. The boy on the other hand, who is ‘up for sale’ by his own father is underage and only 18-years old.

The legal age for marriage in India for a man is 21 years and for a woman it is 18.

The family of the girl assured a swanky car to the father of the boy, if he got his son married to their daughter. While the boy’s father was going ahead with preparations for the wedding scheduled to be held in a week, his family rightly objected to the proposal since the boy was underage, in addition to the woman being older and a divorcee.

Since the teen’s father was unrelenting considering the promise of the “gift” of a car, a family member lodged a complaint with the district authorities here and officials swung into action. An official informed news agency PTI,

An 18-year-old boy getting married is illegal. We have taken an undertaking from him (boy’s father) to the effect that he will desist from making preparations for marriage till the time the boy completes 21 years.

What is surprising and almost a given norm in our society, that it is always the boy/groom’s side who is at fault. We never question the bride or the intention of the girl’s family who offer expensive items in the name of ‘gift’, which later turn to dowry if a marriage fails.

In the above case, the offer of a ‘swanky car’ cannot even be considered as a gift, as clearly the girl’s family is wanting to ‘get rid of their divorced daughter’ to a much younger and underage boy, perhaps because they feel that is the only way to get their girl remarried.

Why is there no action whatsoever on the family of this woman, those who have illegally encouraged the marriage of a boy, who is not permissible to marry as per law of the land?
