Star Indian woman cricketer Smriti Mandhana has reiterated what every Men’s Rights Activist always says. #EqualPay is not about privilege for one gender, but the amount of work a professional puts in and then demands his/her due.
Mandhana, the ICC’s woman cricketer of the year, touched on the contentious issue of pay parity at the unveiling of Bata’s new range of shoes on Wednesday. She said she was not bothered by a pay cheque lower than her male counterparts as she understands that the “revenue which we get is through men’s cricket”. She further emphasised,
The day women’s cricket starts getting revenue, I will be the first person to say that we need the same thing. But right now, we can’t say that.
The male cricketers in the top bracket on BCCI central contracts list are entitled to an annual remuneration of Rs 7 crore, while a female cricketer in the highest category gets Rs 50 lakh for the same period. Dismissing the wide pay gap basis Gender, Smriti said,
I don’t think any of the teammates is thinking about this gap because the only focus right now is to win matches for India, get the crowd coming in, get the revenue. That is the thing which we are aiming for and if that happens all other things are going to fall in place.

Smriti also said if we need to get in the crowd, the team needs to perform. She added,
It is unfair on our part to say that we need same pay, it is not right. So I don’t think I want to comment on that gap.
India will play a tri-series before the World T20 begins in Australia and Mandhana feels that the tournament is important to finalise the team composition right for the big event next month.
Our Take:
- At the outset, a 7Crore Vs 50Lakhs may sound highly unfair to many
- However, pay scales have nothing to do with Gender, but your performance
- The same is very much applicable at any corporate or in the movie making business as well……if you perform better as a woman, you get your share and vice versa
- No one ever questions when a Deepika Padukone gets paid more than Irrfan Khan in Piku or Vikrant Massey in Chhapaak
- No one ever questions when a Chanda Kochhar (ex-ICICI Bank MD & CEO) or Shikha Sharma (Ex-Axis Bank MD & CEO) got more remuneration than Uday Kotak (Current Chairman & MD – Kotak Bank)
Ultimately, it is your qualification/credentials and how you and your entity performs, that decides your pay cheque. #EqualPay is yet another myth created by ultra feminists who want to demand privileged rights by escaping the hard routes of reality.
