Surat Couple Dumps New Born Baby Boy In Bushes Because They Desired Girl Child

Until now, you have read reports on how Indians abandon only girl child immediately after birth, however, the other side which is also prevalent often does not reach mainstream media reports.

Case:

• Mangal Vanjara and his wife Ganga Vanjara had three sons – all aged between two and five years
• Mangal is a truck driver by profession, while Ganga works as domestic help
• Disappointed over not getting a female child in their fourth attempt, the Vanjara couple allegedly abandoned their infant boy in Surat
• They were arrested on January 12
• According to police, Kiran Vanjanara, a resident of Vanjarawad, was sitting on the banks of Tapi river with his friends on January 5 when they heard the cries of a baby
• They searched the area and found the male infant in the nearby bushes
• Seeing an child in an abandoned manner, they immediately called the 108 ambulance services
• The infant was taken to New Civil Hospital where he was admitted in the neo-natal ward

Chowk Bazaar police began a probe during which head constable Harshad Sindhav got information that Ganga Vanjara residing in the nearby area where the infant was found, was pregnant and she could have possibly abandoned the new born.

Sindhav said,

We went to Ganga’s house and questioned her. First she denied that she was pregnant but the neighbours told us she was pregnant. Later, she confessed to have abandoned the male infant on the banks of the river after a premature delivery.

Chowk Bazaar police sub-inspector M K Gadhvi said,

The couple was expecting a female child and but they got male child again, following which they abandoned the baby. She delivered all her children at home.

The couple has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 317. The infant is still under doctor’s supervision.

We often blame and accuse parents for abandoning babies due to the gender being female. However, in another case reported from Mumbai last month, a two-month-old boy abandoned by his parents at King Circle station was reunited with his grandparents by the Wadala Government Railway Police (GRP). The infant was returned after his parents, who claimed to have abandoned him as they could not financially provide for him, were identified through a DNA test.

The baby was found on a bench at platform 1 of the station on December 16. According to the GRP, the boy was wrapped in a cloth and kept outside the first class ladies compartment.
