Greta Thunberg, who became an overnight social media sensation, began her protest outside Sweden’s parliament in October 2018 when she was 15, saying she would refuse to attend school on Fridays until the government tackled the growing climate and ecological crisis.
In less than a year since, she has become one of the world’s most talked-about people, having been invited to speak at the UN general assembly, and inspired global protests attracting hundreds of thousands of young campaigners. In her approximate 4-min speech, Greta said,
You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!
She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!
Russian President Vladimir Putin too accused Greta of failing to understand the realities of a “complex” world. He said,
When someone is using children and teenagers in personal interests, it only deserves to be condemned. I’m sure that Greta is a kind and very sincere girl. But adults must do everything not to bring teenagers and children into some extreme situations.
The Swedish teenage climate activist has been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, and bookmakers have indicated her as the most favourite, after she rose to lead a millions-strong youth movement demanding action on global warming.

Well, keeping the world of politics aside, we agree with Greta that climate crisis indeed needs to be addressed. But what we fail to understand about our society’s behavioural pattern, is how they get carried away with one rehearsed speech from Greta, who has no solutions to offer but only blame and shame the governments, Vs another young boy who has designed a huge floating device to clean up an island of rubbish in the Pacific Ocean, that is three times the size of France and has successfully picked up plastic from the high seas for the first time.
Boyan Slat was just 15-years-old, when he accepted the United Nations Champion of the Earth award in 2014 for his efforts to clear the ocean of plastic. He then made two predictions
- That the road ahead would be bumpy
- He would not give up
Five years later, both those forecasts have come true for Slat. He is as committed as ever to clearing plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using a revolutionary U-shape floater that acts like an artificial coastline. But he had certainly hit those bumps he foresaw.
On October 2, the creator of the Ocean Cleanup project, tweeted that the 600 metre-long (2,000ft) free-floating boom had captured and retained debris from what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Our ocean cleanup system is now finally catching plastic, from one-ton ghost nets to tiny microplastics!

It took Boyan six years, millions of dollars, and a few unsuccessful attempts to come closer to his goals each day. The new system designed by him, managed to pick up 1-millimeter microplastics, which Ocean Cleanup described as “a feat we were pleasantly surprised to achieve”.
- Now that it finally has working technology, the Ocean Cleanup project hopes to scale up its fleet of 2,000-foot long, plastic-capturing, floating booms
- The goal is to remove 50 percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the next five years, and 90 percent of ocean plastic by 2040, an effort it estimates will require around 60 devices
- To his credit, Slat acknowledges the importance of preventing pollution, not just cleaning it up
Very proud of The Ocean Cleanup team for getting to this important milestone today ? Onwards to the next step; a large scale, operational cleanup system! pic.twitter.com/1oSyEN113x

We are not comparing the two, however, it is only an eye opener how the world falls blindly over a herd mentality by appreciating a video that apparently went viral organically, Vs completely overlooking the efforts of another boy who toiled his way over past several years to actually provide the world with real solutions to tackle with environment menace.
The debate is getting hotter over social media! What is it all about? Was it the gender that attracted more eye-balls? Why do we go ga-ga over anything that a girl does and take it as normal even if way more is achieved by a boy of similar age?

Has anyone else noticed the inspiration for Greta.

Nope! Dayumn, media and people around the world, you just do not want to enlighten yourself, so you deserve what you will suffer!
Why to compare people, and put so much amount of hate on? People are different! They just need to unite! so dont spread poison! You just need to think!
About Greta… She looks to be a nice person, with high etics standards and morality! there is nothing to hate on that!
See you! 😉
Are u sure? why doesn’t she come to Russia, India, Kazakstan, to countries which have crazy environmental problems, why? ah? There is no wind to get there or what? nooooo instead she goes to freaking Canada which can be counted as one of the cleanest countries ah? Not using oils and coal would cause chaos in less developed countries. She doesn’t mention the new type of mushrooms which needs some, I hope you close your mouth, and go back to school, teen.
Kring…you really need to follow Greta and listen to how she speaks about climate inequality and how the poorest countries are hurting the most…why are you listening to haters when Greta wants what is best for the WHOLE PLANET?
You rock, Bud H 🙂
pfft, we aren’t hating on Greta, we are just merely pointing that she deserves no Nobel prize when she clearly doesn’t understand how the world works. Also, the boy in question is a person who actually deserves the prize.
His family name made it problematic to become a Media hero.
Hmmnnn…what did Martin Luther King do? Martin Luther King, Jr. was an activist and pastor who promoted and organized non-violent protests. He played a pivotal role in advancing civil rights in America and won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to fight racial inequality in a non-violent manner. So why did he win a Nobel Peace Prize for DOING nothing? He only SPOKE to people who already believed in his cause, who got behind him and he peacefully protested with them – as Greta has been doing. Let’s take away his Nobel prize shall we?
“Greta, who has no solutions to offer but only blame and shame the governments” – GOOD! It’s about time someone did! WE SHOULD ALL BE DOING IT! There is absolutely no reason that we should not be investing in renewable energies into the future. Especially since, putting climate change aside, an estimated 4.6 million people die each year due to air pollution [according to the WHO]. This is not including people who might still be living but suffer from pollution related respiratory illnesses. Governments are not using their own money to keep the fossil fuel industries propped up – they are using tax payers money! My money! Your money! In Australia, our government is currently subsidising the fossil fuel industry to the tune of $10 BILLION per year! They say it is to save jobs but if we started to phase out fossil fuels over a period of years, those in the current mining industries could be retrained. However, there is be no real concern about retraining people in order to keep them employed or real concern about their employment in general. Certain mining companies in Western Australia don’t give a rats arse about their employees. When the market drops [which means their profits] they sack people en masse. The government doesn’t do anything to stop that. These retrenchments are done in the most despicable way too. Most of our mining happens outside of our cities, so many people [mostly men, many with families] who we call FIFO workers [Fly In, Fly Out] travel North to work for a period of time and then fly back home to Perth for another contracted period [e.g. two weeks on, one week off]. When workers are informed their services are no longer needed, it happens AT THE AIRPORT when they are due to fly back to work! Can you imagine? You have packed your bags, said goodbye to your family/friends, driven to the airport, expecting to get on the plane to head off to work and you are stopped and told, “Yeah, you won’t be needing that” when you try to use your boarding pass. It’s disgusting. This “we care about employment/the workers” is a smoke screen that is pulled out to keep allowing big business to keep doing what they are interested – making lots of money – that is all. Governments look after them because most of the politicians are getting themselves set up for employment outside of politics after they retire and enjoy a whole load of subsidies and perks from these businesses while they are still in the game.
So, go ahead, keep hating on people that are trying to help you and I not get f#$ked over by governments and big business, people that are trying to keep you and your kids and their kids healthy and alive. Boyan Slat is awesome but as the meme quite rightly points out only 270 000 people have got behind him [only a couple of people right? Two hundred and seventy thousand = no interest. Calling BS on that one too]. But let’s go down that road…only a few people have got behind Boyan whereas 176 million people are following Greta…that is because 176 million people NOW, at this time, want change. They want to hold governments to account. They just needed someone to pull them together and that is the ‘nothing’ that Greta has done…like Martin Luther King…nothing…
You are an idiot.
You know what the problem is and just because a little girl points the finger and cries on front of the camera doesn’t fix it.
What she’s doing is not new and like many other puppets, without a master she’s useless. She can’t talk without having a speech prepared for her, she is, otherwise as good as a parrot.
People like you are idiots.
You are a coward and you don’t want to do anything to help! All you do is to agree with what she’s been forced to repeat. She’s a good actress though but so are all imbeciles like her.
What bothers me the most is that you and all the other idiots by complaining prove me that you are part of the problem.
You want to fix it? Do something! Don’t wIt for a stupid kid to shame you into agreeing with her!
You are an idiot.
Exactly
Savag! 😉
