A 27-year-old man from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging at his house on Thursday night. The deceased was booked on the same day for allegedly molesting a woman, which he claimed to be false.
Police has registered abetment to suicide charges and started investigation.
Case:
Victim Sumit Kumar Saxena was an electrician, and is survived by his wife, Priyanka, and three children — Arth (6), Dhruv (6) and Aanya (2). Priyanka is a teacher at a private school.
The family of the victim claimed that he was innocent and a fake complaint was filed against him. They also alleged that a police constable had “demanded Rs 50,000 to get his name cleared” from the matter.
The incident was reported from Ganesh Nagar locality under the jurisdiction of Subhash Nagar police station.
Saxena’s elder brother, Amit, on Friday filed a complaint against the constable and two other persons, following which SSP Bareilly, Rohit Singh Sajwan, ordered an FIR in the case and directed the SP (city) to monitor the investigation. Sajwan also shunted the accused policeman to the reserve police lines and ordered a departmental enquiry against him.
Amit told TOI,
My brother was standing at a shop when my neighbours, Sunny Srivastava and Avdhesh Kumar, asked for some money from him to consume liquor. When he refused, one of them attempted to snatch his mobile phone but failed. They then beat him up with sticks and took away the phone.
My brother then went to Madinath police outpost to lodge a complaint but the constable on duty forced him to sit on the floor and threatened to register an FIR against him.
Adding further Amit said,
The constable then told my brother that there was a complaint of molestation against him and that he should come back with Rs 50,000 within an hour to avoid police action. Sumit returned home to arrange the money but couldn’t do so. Then he locked himself in his room and hanged himself to death after the constable repeatedly called him and threatened him.
Now, police officials are threatening us to withdraw our complaint, and have also offered us money. We want justice for Sumit. The autopsy has confirmed that my brother had injuries on his face.
SSP Sajwan told TOI,
A complaint of molestation was already lodged against Sumit. However, we are also probing the role of the police constable in this case. An FIR has been registered under section 306 (abetment of suicide) against constable Rajkumar and two other persons. Police will ensure an impartial investigation in the case.
