On Thursday, a 19-year-old woman from Mumbai was murdered by her friends during a rooftop party at Bhagwati Heights in Khar during a New Year’s Eve party. Two persons, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with the murder.
Gajanan Kabdule, senior PI, Khar Police said that the accused duo were produced in Bandra court on Saturday and were remanded to police custody till January 7.
Case:
According to sources, the deceased, identified as Jhanavi Kukreja, saw a couple (her friends) in a compromising position. An argument followed between the couple Shree Jogdhankar (22) and Diya Padankar (19) and Jhanavi which got escalated.
The victim’s close friends later revealed that Jhanavi was brutally beaten up by the couple, who allegedly grabbed her by her hair and pulled her down to the second floor.
Initially, the police said that the victim fell down from the terrace during an argument with the accused couple.
However, further investigation by the police revealed that she was pulled by her hair from the terrace to the second floor. The police officers also found blood stains on the staircase and her body was taken to Bhabha Hospital.
The Khar police registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Diya and Shree.
Senior police officers, including Joint commissioner (law and order) Vishwas Nangre Patil, Additional Commissioner (West Region) Sandeep Karnik, and DCP (Zone 09) Abhishek Trimukhe, reached the Khar police station and are interrogating all the suspects who were present at the party.
Mother’s Statement To ABP News
Jhanavi was a second year student of human psychology and was a bright, compassionate and a socially responsible teen. Jhanavi’s mother told ABP,
At 12:15 am her friend came to pick her up for a new year’s party, my husband asked her to call him when the party would end so that he can go pick her up. At 5 am we received a call from one of the parents of Jhanavi’s friend who was also at the party and called us to Khar police station.
When we reached police station we were told to go to Bhabha hospital. She was declared dead at the hospital. Police is doing a good job but we expect justice.
As reported further by ABP, Diya was a friend of Jhanavi and the two entered into an argument after the latter objected to her closeness with Shree. Apparently Jhanavi and Shree were in a relationship and as per police sources, she saw him with Diya in a compromising position. However, the victim’s parents have refuted the love triangle theory surrounding the case.
Alcohol was consumed at the party and the police is now probing it from drugs angle as well.
Diya was Jhanavi’s best friend and next door neighbour. The two had even started a baking venture together.
