2021 has been a year of ups, downs, sorrows, loss, which has made each one of us only stronger. Some stories during the pandemic were not only heartbreaking but also moulded us all to expect the unexpected in our lives!

I lost both of my parents during the pandemic.

19. Broke. Alone. With crippling anxiety. Uncertainty. And deteriorating mental health.

My circumstances took everything out of me.

In early 2020, I lost my Dad.

I was interning at a hotel in Mumbai and had to fly out to the other side of the country for his last rituals.

19. Broke. Alone. I couldn’t be there for him.

Felt like I disappointed him as his son.

As the only child, I needed to do everything in my power to put meals on the table for Ma.

Hopeful, that my internship would open up doors, I decided to fly back.

Within weeks, the pandemic hit.

All flights were canceled. And I was stuck there.

Miserable. Clueless. Afraid.

I had to take up odd jobs.

To be honest, it didn’t pay well. Didn’t even cover my rent.

But whatever I got, I sent back home.

Lived off of ramen and juice for weeks.

A few months later, while freelancing as a ghostwriter, something clicked.

Two of my clients went viral.

Things were looking up.

So I started preparing for a flight back home. Hoping that I could.

Ma was ecstatic.

But unfortunately, our luck ran out too soon.

I lost Ma before I could fly back.

19. Broke. Alone. I couldn’t be there for her either.

Came back to an empty apartment which I couldn’t even call “Home” anymore.

I still remember my hands shaking when I was trying to put the keys into the door.

I spent weeks locked in my room.

When I finally got out, I’d lost all my clients.

The break was too long. And they decided to move on.

Whatever money I had, I spent it on bills, maintenance, and EMIs.

20. Broke. Alone. Setting out for a new journey.

But this time, things were different.

I wasn’t the old me anymore.

After a couple of months, wandering around and wasting my time –

I was done. I needed money. Desperately.

So I started looking for a job. Anything that could pay the bills.

I didn’t have a choice.

After weeks of searching, I was hired by my current company.

Last month, I was lucky enough to be promoted after 7 months.

21. Slowly settling down. Part of something bigger than myself.

I couldn’t help but think about last year.

If my story can show you anything, it’s this:

We need to understand that life’s not always fair.

Things happen. We win. We lose.

And even though I could say, “Resilience and hard work are irreplaceable.”

I believe that we need “hope and faith” more.

Because when you hit rock bottom. And feel like you can’t do this anymore.

That’s when things start getting better.

So keep going 🌻
