Bride-burning in India, is one of the worst kinds of atrocities caused on married women, however, burning of a husband by his own in-laws barely gets reported. Even if it does so, it fails to invoke the same amount of angst and disgust as we feel towards women victims.
A recent case from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh has been reported where a newly married man was set ablaze when he visited his wife’s home on the eve of Holi, the festival of colours.
24-year-old Raju Kashyap, a resident of Bahedi town, had been married just four-months ago. His wife had returned to her maternal home to celebrate first Holi with the family as per Hindu traditions. Raju had informed his parents that he would be visiting his wife’s home on Saturday and staying over at her place the same night.

The husband had also taken new clothes to be gifted to his bride. However, Raju’s parents got a call at night and were informed that their son had been set on fire. They were left completely devastated and alleged that Raju had been murdered by his wife and in-laws.
Registering a complaint against his son’s wife and her family members, Raju’s father Ramgopal Kashyap said,
As per the rituals, woman usually spends her first Holi at her maternal house after marriage. So, my daughter-in-law went back home. Raju left to meet her and had purchased new clothes for her on Saturday.
In the evening, Raju told us that he would stay there. But, later in the night, we received a call saying that Raju has committed suicide.
Ramgopal also added that the argument between his son and daughter-in-law took place over a youth. He said,

We have come to know that there was an argument between my son, his wife and in-laws over a youth. We have asked police to take action against all the people responsible for my son’s death.
Following the complaint from Raju’s father, an FIR has been registered against four persons, including wife, at Deorania police station under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide).
According to police investigation, the couple had a quarrel and Raju poured kerosene on him and killed himself. SHO Deorania Rajkumar Singh said,
We have registered an FIR against the wife, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and a youth for abetment of suicide. We have detained a few suspects for questioning and waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain whether it was a suicide or he was murdered.
