Some days ago, a case from Karnal, Haryana, went viral where a woman named Heena, along with her family, went to media alleging that the to-be-groom had demanded dowry. Instantly, the man and his family were abused by rabid social media activists, without listening to their side.
However, the groom, his father and brother have now come forward to share their side of the story. They have also alleged that the charges levied by the woman and her family are totally baseless, and in fact they were the ones blackmailing the man and his parents to give them money, else face false cases.
In a detailed video interview conducted by Khabar Junction, Aashu, the accused unmarried groom says,
First of all, I wasn’t even ready for the marriage, let alone ask for dowry. Yes, I accept that I went to see the girl, only because I was asked to by my parents.
He added,
I was in a rush that day as I was getting numerous calls from my client, hence, I didn’t even have a proper conversation with the girl. I never sent her any messages, neither made calls to her.

Aashu claims that he was forced by Heena’s parents to stand beside her and pose for a photograph.
The groom’s father mentioned that he had been acquainted with the bride’s father since the last few years. The man wanted his daughter Heena to marry Aashu. Hence, the groom’s family had taken him to their residence to see the bride. Nonetheless, the family later refused to take the proposal ahead, as Aashu was not ready for marriage, and the same was conveyed to the woman’s family politely.
Aashu’s father says,
On November 21, I got a call from their side asking us to visit them for discussing our children’s marriage. Our entire family was so confused, as we had already told them we did not want to proceed and they had even accepted it.
He further stated that Aashu was on a call with them explaining that he does not want to get married. However, Heena’s father allegedly told them,
If you do not come, we will destroy you.
On November 27, the bride’s family made a child throw a wedding invitation card at their house, after which the groom’s family filed an official complaint with the Sector 32 police station.

The man’s side claims that there was neither any engagement nor any ritual was performed. Nobody in the extended family knew about anything and the groom’s father said,
Relatives get to know about weddings once everything is finalised. But in our case, we never went ahead with the talks since our son did not want to get married. Now, the woman’s family is accusing us of demanding dowry.
The bride’s side was also called to the police station for interrogation. However, nobody turned up and thus Aashu’s family asked the cops to arrest them. As informed by the father, the cops questioned,
On what basis should we arrest them? They’re only distributing cards.
After a few days, Heena’s family allegedly put a condition for Aashu and his family. According to the man’s brother,
They forced us to choose one out of the two choices. Either marry their daughter or give them Rs 10 lakh. We also have an audio and video recording of the same.
The groom’s father questioned,
They also said that they will eventually spend Rs 10 lakh for the wedding of our children from their side. But we had only one question – Why would we force our son to get married to that girl when he does not want to?

Aashu pleaded,
I reject all the false charges made against me and my family. We have been forcefully dragged into this matter. I have faced so much hate on social media. Moreover, I am not able to concentrate on my office work and was hospitalised for 2-3 days in between as I was facing so many challenges mentally.
The groom’s advocate, Parveen Narwal briefed media,
When a marriage is fixed, consent from both the sides are taken, but in this case, my client had clearly declined to get married. Despite their denial, the woman’s family started proceeding with the arrangements, while my client’s family was not even aware of the same.
Speaking about the dowry case, advocate Narwal asked,
If the groom was asking for dowry, then why do the girl’s side want to get their daughter married to such a man? We have also filed an extortion case against the woman’s family.
Lastly, the groom said that they had also approached CM’s office as well as local Superintendent of Police when nobody was listening to their side. He ended,
Our matter has now reached the court.
