Assam Boy Commits Suicide After Kangaroo Court Fines Him Rs 42,000

What happens when kangaroo courts pronounce instant justice? What happens to the rights of the alleged accused? Who pays for his humiliation even before being convicted by the legal system? One such story gets reported from Assam where a 16-year-old boy decided to end his life after being harassed by locals over an allegation.

The police in western Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Friday registered a case against a group of villagers for alleged moral policing that drove the minor boy to death. According to the reports, a kangaroo court in Bharalkundi village had fined the boy, Uday Malo, Rs 42,000 for allegedly being disrespectful to a woman three days ago. However, there was no clarity on what exactly happened. Some villagers claimed the boy had hit the woman while riding his bicycle.

The villagers said the boy was going through depression since the kangaroo court slapped the penalty. One of the locals told media,

His family did not have the money to pay.

The boy jumped in front of a speeding train. The family lodged a complaint after his death late on Thursday. Subodh K. Sonowal, the district’s Superintendent of Police said,

He felt extremely humiliated and had no option but to commit suicide. I have asked the local police to investigate thoroughly and find the cause behind the boy’s death and see to it that the culprits are not spared.

While it is not yet proven under what pressure did the villagers slap such a big fine on the victim, the investigations will also reveal whether the same was done with any questioning or on the mere word of the woman who was allegedly hit by the boy.

Whatever be the case details, no one except the legal judiciary system has the right to convict or acquit citizens of the country. A life gone too soon!
