This case pertains to December 2019. A gruesome murder of a 65-year-old woman in Garcha, Kolkata had been solved, with authorities arresting her widowed daughter-in-law, Dimple Jund, granddaughter Kanika (18), and her daughter-in-law’s lover Saurav Puri (22).
Case:
On December 12, 2019, at around 10.30pm, Kanika Jund told her grandmother’s neighbour Deboleena Roy,
Didi, please keep a watch on granny. She is unwell, but refuses to come and stay with us. I am here to deliver her dinner my mother has sent.
However, next morning, victim Urmila Jund was discovered dead in the bathroom of her youngest son Balraj’s house. Her skull had been severed, stomach had been ripped apart to the point where her internal organs were visible, and her torso had two dozen stab wounds, each measuring two to five inches in length. The murder reportedly took place between 12:30am to 1:30am which was confirmed by the post-mortem report, and main reason of her death was by the injuries on her chest and abdomen.
Police Investigation
One evidence pointed the needle of suspicion towards granddaughter Kanika since the investigation started. The landlord informed police, that he had overheard the elderly woman addressing someone by nickname, Gudiya, at 12:20 am, minutes before she was murdered. This was when Urmila probably screamed from the flat to confirm who was knocking.
Kanika, Std X student, who had initially visited her grandmother’s apartment at 10.30pm, returned to her grandmother’s room two hours later, and was witness to her accomplice savagely killing the old woman – on instructions given by mother Dimple. Kanika reportedly also smothered her grandmother’s face with a pillow, when she started calling out her name.
According to the investigation, Dimple was the mastermind behind the meticulously organised crime. The officers claimed that Kanika and Saurav had returned after the initial public visit, where the former created evidence that she had left the premise. They then proceeded straight to Urmila’s apartment during the second visit. Senior Lalbazar officer then told TOI,
Dimple, the brains behind the operation, did not come to the house but kept a watch over the developments.
After hours of questioning, Dimple too, broke down and shared details how they hatched a plan to murder Urmila, a month ago. Her mother-in-law was residing with her deceased husband’s younger brother, Balraj and his family, who was going to be in Siliguri for a wedding, while the elderly woman was going to be alone for three days. Dimple thought this would be their best chance to execute the plan. Investigating officer then said,
We first arrested the daughter-in-law and the granddaughter. In another four hours, we arrested Puri from Punjab, to where he had fled. All of them will be produced before a city court on Saturday.
Motive
When asked about the motive, a senior official stated three chief concerns that affected Urmila and Dimple’s relationship. The initial point of contention was Urmila’s eldest and youngest brother’s equal ownership of their Ritchie Road flat. However, once the former, Mandeep died, Dimple wanted Urmila to transfer complete ownership of the flat on her name, which the mother-in-law had refused.
The officer also said,
Secondly, Dimple had a joint account with Urmila but she was apparently denied access to the account after the death of her husband five years ago. Further, prior to Mandeep’s death, the two brothers had an equal share over business profits. After the death, Dimple claimed she was only given a fixed monthly amount, with which she was finding it difficult to make ends meet.
According to the cops, the brutality of the murder demonstrated Dimple’s hatred towards Urmila. The police further said that cash and jewellery worth several lakhs were also missing and only a part of them had been recovered.
