This is a case from Odisha where a woman named Tapaswini Dash, a native of Chhatrapur in Ganjam district became famous, after she sat for 11-days in front of her husband’s house at Brahmanagar in Berhampur town under a tent. The woman demanded that her in-laws must accept her as their daughter-in-law.
However, the story has taken many twists and turns and now the husband has released a video, where his wife has been allegedly demanding Rs 8 lakh for divorce. He has also released an audio sharing how he has been mentally disturbed due to harassment from his wife.
Case:
Tapaswini claimed that she married Dr Sumit Sahu at a court on September 7, 2020. After marriage, she lived at Sumit’s home as his wife for six months. However, she claims that her in-laws drove her own of their home, on the pretext of conducting their marriage as per vedic tradition. She was allegedly asked to go to her parents’ place and stay there till her marriage with Sumit was solemnised.
Last month, Tapaswini sought help from one Pramila Tripathy, a social worker and from November 22, Tapaswini sat in front of Sumit’s home in a tent for 11-days, however, after a court’s judgment, the tent was removed and the couple was shifted to a guest house of Aska Sugar Mill.
The court then directed the couple to bury the hatchet within seven days and make up mind to start a happy conjugal life.
While the government had been directed to bear the cost of their stay in the rented accommodation, the court asked Sumit to bear the entire cost of his wife’s food and other expenses.
During their stay, the court ordered that no one would interfere or try to meet the couple. Following the court’s direction in letter and spirit, the administration deployed a police team at the guest house for round the clock surveillance.
Wife Alleges Husband Is Absconding
As Sumit did not appear for court hearing last week, Tapaswini alleged that he was absconding and not answering anyone’s calls. On Saturday, she lodged a missing complaint at Aska police station alleging that Sumit had fled from the guest house, where they were staying temporarily, after completion of the Court ordered seven-day stay. Speaking to the media, she quoted,
My petition was scheduled to be heard in the court today. I hoped a judgement in my favour, at least a direction to make arrangements for my living. But that did not happen since my in-laws’ advocate did not file the reply and instead, asked for 15 more days’ time. However, the court has fixed Monday for the hearing.
Once again, Tapaswini sat down in a tent in front of her in-laws’ house at Brahmanagar. This time around, she said she would not budge till justice was delivered to her. Tapaswini along with some women activists also barged into Dr Sumit’s home.

Husband’s Statement
Dr Sumit Sahu opened up on Thursday and said all allegations against him were ‘a bunch of lies’, reported Odisha TV.
Releasing an audio message, Sumit said that he was under tremendous mental stress due to the false allegations levelled against him by his wife Tapaswini and he was taking rest after consulting with doctors and his superior authorities. Sahu said,
I am not absconding, neither have I been kidnapped. I am alone and taking rest. My higher-ups in office know about it. Allegations of kidnapping by my father is baseless and a lie.
Adding further, Sumit quoted,
The seven-day stay in a house did not do any good to our relationship. However, as per the court’s order, despite being unwell, I am searching for a house to stay together with her (Tapaswini).
Blaming Tapaswini for all trouble, Sahu said,
She is doing all these only to be in the limelight. She is getting publicity and sympathy from the people by portraying me and my family as evil. I have informed the Court all the sufferings that I and my family had to undergo because of her.
