Bridal wear brand Mohey’s new advertisement featuring Alia Bhatt released recently and is already facing flak on social media, as the netizens are questioning the attack on traditions and rituals.
About the Ad
The ad speaks of the Hindu ritual of Kanyadaan (where family of the bride hands over their daughter to family of the groom) and how it should be redefined as Kanyamaan. In the 1 minute 40 seconds ad, Bhatt is seen saying,
Everyone said she is a ‘paraya dhan’. Don’t spoil her too much but he did not pay heed to such people. But at the same time, he did not say that I am neither ‘parayi’ nor ‘dhan’.
Am I an object to be separated, become a paraiah and be given away to someone else? Why only Kanyadaan? New idea is to believe in Kanyamaan.

Soon after the ad was released on Manyavar’s official YouTube page, netizens started questioning the brand’s latest ad campaign against the Hindu ritual of Kanyadaan.
MDO will refrain from getting into politics or religion. However, here is one video that is going viral on social media, where a Sanskrit scholar, Nityanand Misra, beautifully explains the meaning of Dhan & Daan in it’s right context.
Misra quotes,
Dhan has several meanings, not just money or gold. Dhan also means someone who is beloved to you. Dhan could also mean Putra Dhan, Vidya Dhan, Santosh Dhan, Bhagwan (Payoji Maine Naam Ratan Dhan Payo)…So there is no problem in calling the bride ‘Dhan’.
Misra also speaks about the context in which we refer to bride to be given as Daan? He elaborates about Vidya Daan, which indicates Saraswati…..or in the context of Jeevan Daan where one gives up life for someone…Daan is not only about an object or item, but also about knowledge and life. Daan is also used for Boys as quoted in the Mahabharata, says Misra.
Lastly, the Sankrit scholar counters the logic of the Ad to replace the word Kanyadaan with Kanyamaan. Watch entire video below to understand the deeper meaning of this Hindu tradition.
