Domestic violence on any gender is for real. Perpetrator of such violence can also be either genders. We must speak up for anyone suffering such abuse and not make it Man Vs Woman issue.
According to a recent TOI report from Rajasthan, a man along with his wife beat his mother, threatened and threw her out of her home at the Kusip village under Siwana police station area in Barmer district. Later, a senior citizen NGO got involved, who has promised justice for this elderly woman.
Case:
Madan Kanwar (65), a resident of Kusip village in Jaisalmer, has been residing at Sakhi centre in Barmer for the past few days. She left the house due to harassment and torture by her only son Narpat Singh and daughter-in-law Mamta Kanwar – who had been allegedly harassing her for the last many years. The woman was being harassed as some part of her land and plot were already sold and the son and his wife wanted to acquire the remaining part of it.
However, after being rendered homeless, Kanwar approached SP Anand Sharma and narrated her ordeal.
The elderly woman is now staying at Sakhi centre. On getting information, district collector Lok Bandhu went to the centre, met the woman and assured her of fair action. He also guided her to claim for maintenance allowance.
Statement by Police
SP Anand Shama said that when the elderly woman visited him, she informed him that she did not want to go back to her son and daughter-in-law and therefore, she preferred living at the Sakhi centre.
Centre counsellor Imarti said that Madan Kanwar is very scared and also quoted that if she goes back home, then she will be killed. The counsellor said,
She is so scared that she is not able to meet her daughters.
The Collector of the district then called the Siwana SDO and directed him to immediately sanction the amount under Elderly Maintenance Act. He also asked the tehsildar to ensure that the woman in distress got her share of the native land. Lok Bandhu also directed Women & Child Development department Dy director Prahalad Singh Rajpurohit to provide help to Madan Kanwar by coordinating with all the concerned officers.
In the meantime, the district collector inspected the Sakhi kendra one-stop centre, took stock of the arrangements and gave necessary directions.
MDO Take:
- We will never see outrage in social media when the victim is mother-in-law, a woman too
- Somehow, our society is only active in demanding justice when the sufferer of abuse is a daughter-in-law
- Much has to be blamed on our gender biased media, which subtly pushes only certain stories making them viral with trending hashtags – which makes the readers believe that crime has a gender and the victim is always the bahu (daughter-in-law)
- MDO does not respect such sons who either independently or under the influence of their wives do not respect their parents
