This case pertains to August 2018.
Assam Police had registered a case against Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old married woman in Nagaon district.
However, Gohain in return has filed a counter complaint of ‘blackmailing’ against the woman and her family as confirmed by officer on special duty Sanjiv Goswami. Later the officer claimed that the case against the minister has been withdrawn.
The Nagaon police station officer-in-charge Anata Das claimed that the woman later pleaded to withdraw the case in court, however, the police was firm on investigation. Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (headquarter) Sabita Das said the case was registered against Gohain on August 2 after receiving a complaint at Nagaon police station.
We have registered the case. The investigation has already begun and we will proceed as per law, as reported by PTI.
Das, however, refused to share any further detail about the case. The case has been registered as number 2592/18 and an FIR has been lodged under :
- IPC sections 417 (cheating)
- 376 (rape)
- 506 (criminal intimidation)
The officer also confirmed that they have recorded the lady’s statement, however, added that she refused to undergo medical examination. The official also said,
The complaint says that the alleged incident took place seven to eight months ago. Both Gohain and the woman knew each other for a long time and the Union minister used to visit her home.
The minister has not been arrested as of now and the official said if Gohain’s arrest is imminent, he will be arrested after the probe is complete. The Union minister has refused to speak to the media as of now.
We cannot judge whether the case is genuine or not, however, the fact that woman has refused to allow a medical examination on her makes her allegations suspicious. The lapse in time of eight months as confirmed by the woman also raises questions if this is another case of a consensual relationship gone sour.
We must also understand that the man here is someone in power and thus his arrest has not been immediate. In case of a common man, he is first sent behind bars and then made to run from pillar to post to get a bail.
